I got out an old PC to test (it had a flaky graphics card). So it booted, but no display. The hard disk light is flashing for 3 hours now, I assume it is doing fsck after 180 days of no use. I think the 2 TB drive was only 25% used (500 GB). It seems a long time to me. It has Debian 32-bit on it; I dragged it out, as I have no others with 32-bit linux.

It helps when you provide real information about the system/problem when you post.
It allows subject matter experts to give more pertinent/exact information/help.

My Mageia Release 8 Linux is constantly writing to the systemd log that it can not
get information from the display when it is not on. Therefore there is constant
disk activity. :(

Food for thought, I always set up my systems to allow other machines on the lan
to allow ssh from lan nodes. Helps when I can not get display/keyboard access.

Dunno. If it has a DVD drive Id boot a live DVD and then see what is
going on. Assuming you get any display at all. Otherwise use a different
display card
