For some reason, I cannot get this to update or install. I have used
this before to update using the computers internet connection instead of
wireless. Today, it said there was a mandatory update. Tried to do it
and it said it was unable to complete and would open the update folder.
This turned out to be the windows documents folder with nothing related
to TomTom in it. It has worked on this computer before, so I
uninstalled and reinstalled, even using windows/setting/apps to do the
uninstall.

So, it appears to install and then start up. It gets to showing the
outskirts of the window and then just sits there. Right clicking in the
taskbar on the program trying to open gives three options. TemMDC, Pin
to taksbar, and close window.

I tried excluding the folder in windows defender and also the process
listed in the starting shortcut. Which brings a possibly related
question. The only way I can get to the program is through this
shortcut that gets created at install. There is nothing listed under
the start menu. Seems odd to me. Any ideas on how to get past this and
get it working again?

Don't understand. Does the wireless mechanism in some way not use the
internet - does it come direct from the satellite?

The GPS unit works by itself just fine. It is not the GPS function, but
updating the devices file that's the problem. New maps, for example.
It will connect to my wireless connection to do updates. Problem is
this is a motorcycle GPS and out in my garage. It's a ways from the
router and not a great connection. I have wired my internet out to my
garage and have used this before today to update the different GPS
devices I have using the wired connection to internet. It is the
program TomTom MyDrive that doesn't work, won't update, or install again
on the garage computer.

So what is this garage computer? Does it use the wired connection?

If you put a wireless access point in the garage, connected to the wired
ethernet, will the GPS unit on the motorcycle use the better WiFi signal
and update its maps properly?

Sorry if I am not explaining this properly. I do not have a wireless
access point in the garage. I have a Cat6 cable hard wired to my garage
computer that previously was using wireless. Like I said, it's a ways
to the router and it at times got slow. Internet is great on that now.
The TomTom device does connect to the computer easily and is recognized
via USB. It still won't use the computers internet because the program
just won't run even after multiple attempts at install. You can't just
connect it to the computer and update. They have to go through TomTom's
program. Kinda funny though, it actually just kind of acknowledges you
have updates available and then tells you to use the screen on the
device to do it. You'd think that you should be able to just update the
device with the app on the computer, but it just kind of gives it
permission to do so. Just wish I could get to that point.

Since the computer has WiFi, can you configure internet sharing so it
functions as an access point? That way your GPS device could
communicate using WiFi to the computer and thence by Ethernet cable to
your router - much faster than by WiFi to the router.

So you won't need the TomTom program installed on the computer - the GPS
device updates its maps directly from the TomTom support site.

Is there a TomTom forum where you can ask>

Or can you get a different GPS device, i.e. not TomTom?

https://mydrive.tomtom.com/

That's a web site. You don't need to update your web browser to get
something new at their web site. I didn't bother playing with it, but
noticed there is a Login to get to your account. Can you login okay?

Because I have Windows Updates disabled in my Windows 10 Home x64 22h2
setup, I cannot use the Microsoft Store UWP app. So, I went to the web
site at:

https://apps.microsoft.com/store/apps

and searched on "tomtom". No hits on an UWP app for TomTom. At:

https://www.tomtom.com/en_us/navigation/

under the "Apps" button, there is no MyDrive app. Other than the
mydrive.tomtom.com web site (which is named "TomTom MyDrive", I can't
find any app or program names "TomTom MyDrive".

Ah, you asked in a Windows 10 newsgroup, but there is a TomTom MyDrive
app for Android or iOS.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomtom.mydrive.eu
https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/tomtom-mydrive/id984450411?ls=1

Since you asked in a Windows 10 newsgroup, no idea which mobile platform
you are running their app. I have an Android phone registered in my
Google account. When I go to the Android app page, I'm told "This app
is not available for your device". Most likely it requires an Android
version later than mine. I have Android 8.0.0. However, when I click
on "About this app" in the app page, it then tells me "Compatibility
with your active devices: LG V20 - Does not work on your device." Yet
it notes the minimum Android version is 6.0. No clue why the Play Store
thinks my Android 8 phone won't with the app that says Android 6 is the
minimum OS version. Guess it doesn't like my phone's hardware.

When you go to the Android or iOS app page, does it show the app is
compatible with your phone?

For an Android phone, that newsgroup is over at comp.mobile.android. I
don't do Apple stuff, so I cannot suggest where to get help on their
devices.

If you're using the Android SDK (inside a VM), Bluestacks, or some other
means of running an Android app inside an emulator running atop of
Windows 10, you'll have to better state just how you are running an
Android or iOS atop of Windows 10 (the topic of this newsgroup).

For example, you said only the shortcut works to load the TomTom MyDrive
app, but it's not listed in the Start menu. Well, if you were running
Virtualbox to load the Android SDK emulator inside a virtual machine,
you might also be using Virtualbox's taskbar. That hides that the app
is loaded from within a VM that Vbox's taskbar shortcut points to. The
app isn't installed in the host OS (Windows 10). The app is installed
inside a guest OS (Android emulator) running inside a VM.

Maybe I missed finding a TomTom MyDrive program (Win32) or app (UWP)
that runs natively inside of Windows 10 (this newsgroup). If instead
you are running the TomTom MyDrive app atop some emulator or inside some
VM then you have to identify that setup. Before wasting time debugging
why whatever setup you are using on Windows 10 fails, install the TomTom
MyDrive app on your phone to see if it works there; i.e., run the native
app on its target OS.

Or maybe you gave the wrong product title. There is the TomTom MyDrive
Connect (notice the addition of "Connect" to the product name) that
installs on Windows or Mac.

https://www.tomtom.com/en_us/navigation/mydrive-connect/

There is no download link for their MyDrive *Connect* program.
Apparently you have to log into an account with them before you can get
that program.

TomTom MyDrive could refer to:
- Their mydrive.tomtom.com web site.
- Their Android or iOS app.
- Or to their Connect app, but you didn't mention "Connect".

I've never used TomTom, because I thought you had to subscribe (pay) to
use their services. If so, is your TomTom account still active?

Did you yet contact their technical support to get help on installing
whatever it is you installed on your Windows 10 computer?

Yes, that's where you go to download MyDrive Connect. That is the
program I had installed and used in the past to update the GPS device
via the computer instead of wireless. Today the program said it had to
be updated before you could use it. That's where I'm stuck.

I just tried the program on my other computer in the house and it too
needed to be updated before use. I let it do so and it works just fine
after being updated. Something got screwed up on the install on this
computer. Both are windows 10 systems.

One thing I recall that happened on this machine and not the one that
works was a box displaying progress on something I think it said was
visual basic related. It happened fast, and I'm not sure, but I think
it was visual basic 6. I'll try to see if I can work on reinstalling
that separately on the chance that got screwed up.

Uninstalling and reinstalling MyDrive Connect hasn't shown that same VB6
stuff since the first time I tried today, and is getting me nowhere.

I do have their app on my Iphone, it works just as intended. I just
don't use it for doing the big updates on the device, or any updates for
that matter. It is fine for getting a quick route to the GPS device,
but that's about all I use it for.

Not running a virtual box. And the computer it does work on does have a
listing for TomTom and I can run it from there using the start menu. It
is odd that even when it did work before, I never had an entry for it in
the start menu programs list.

That is correct. I use this often and sign in regularly as I plot
routes to take on the motorcycle. Like I say, it worked until today and
the update attempt.

You are correct I think that you do have to pay for their services if
you use your phone as the device. I think they give a trial, and then
you have to pay. I have no need to use my phone as I have purchased
their devices for both my 4 and 2 wheel rides. Once you have the
device, you use their site for additional stuff like route planning,
favorites, voices, etc. That's all free.

I've not contacted them on my problem, but have done a bit of searching.
Nothing much has come of it so far.

I guess initially I thought a few of the clues I had might get one of
our local gurus an idea of what has happened. I really have not
provided much helpful information, mostly because I don't have any.
This win 10 system works, the program did work before today, and now it
just don't. I'll look at the VB6 thing and see if that might be the
culprit. Please don't spend any more time on this. I just don't really
have enough information to be helpful. But thanks for trying anyway.

You sure it wasn't something about VC++ libraries? Some programs will
install, if missing, the version of VC++ that they want to use. Having
a newer version of VC++ won't work, because the programs expects
behavior and functions available in an older version not available in a
newer version. Some programs that rely on VC++ don't bother to install
it. They assume the version they call has already been installed.

As part of my initial setup of Windows, I install several versions of
VC++, which are:

VC++ Redistributables 2005 SP1
VC++ Redistributables 2008
VC++ Redistributables 2010 SP1
VC++ Redistributables 2013
VC++ Redistributables 2015-2017-2019
VC++ Redistributables 2022

See:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170

I downloaded these to archive with all my other downloads, because I
have run into a problem that a problem that bundles a VC++ lib fails to
recognize the version they want is already installed, and they step on
the existing install to corrupt it, especially if the installer hangs or
crashes.

It's been a couple decades since I ran anything that needed the VB
redistributables (libs). The last I remember of having to get a VB lib
was for some video game, and that was over 20 years ago. I never
bothered to download to keep the old VB lib packages since I haven't had
an issue with VB for decades. Back then they weren't called VB
distributables, but VB runtimes. I don't think the MyDrive Connect
program is anywhere that old. VB6 is included in Win10 and 11; however,
VB6 runtimes are 32-bit only, so all its components must be hosted in
32-bit application processes. You noted using Windows 10, but not its
bitwidth (32- or 64-bit). For Win10 x64, open Task Manager, open the
Details tab, right-click on a header row, Select columns, and add the
Platform column. Then you can see if an process is running as native
64-bit, or as 32-bit encapsulated within the WOW64 compatibility layer.
WOW32 allowed 16-bit programs to run on 32-bit Windows, and WOW64 allows
32-bit programs to run on 64-bit Windows.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_on_Windows
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/visualstudio/visual-basic-6/visual-basic-6-support-policy

When installing the MyDrive Connect program, are you letting the
installer decide where to install, or are you picking the folder?
32-bit programs get installed under C:\Program Files (x86), while 64-bit
programs install under C:\Program Files. Or, if you pick the install
folder, you could create your own, like C:\Programs, to install the
program in a subfolder under there.

Under "Windows Features", VB is not listed as a component you can remove
or add, so you can't go there to remove and then replace the VB
component(s). Possibly it is an optional component to select during a
custom install of Windows.

https://helpdesk.atril.com/hc/en-us/articles/205537331-How-to-re-install-the-Visual-Basic-6-Runtime

If push comes to shove, you might have to install Visual Studio to get
the VB runtime(s). There is a Community edition that is free; see:

https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs/community/

If you have to install VS, do a custom install to be sure the VB
runtime(s) are included in the installation.

I'd first contact TomTom's tech support to see what they say.

Then get an AccessPoint, attach it to the CAT6 cable, link the TomTom
to the AP and be happy.
If you don't use the AP, you disconnect it and put it in the drawer.
That seems to be the easiest way.
Simple AP are really cheap.
I prefer the easy WiFi Updates with my TomTom G06200.
Just plug power and tap for updates and it does everything itself.

Ah, my bad. Like seeing "KISS" and mistaking it for the band instead of
the acronym.

https://doc.qt.io/qt-6/windows-deployment.html
"For Windows desktop applications, the required runtime files for the
compiler are also copied to the deployable folder by default (unless the
option --no-compiler-runtime is specified)."

So, we might be back to having to [re]install [stepping atop the
existing installs of] the C++ runtimes if TomTom didn't include them, or
corrupted them. I didn't bother to check which C++ runtime versions are
needed for which version of QT for what the app calls. I'd probably
just reinstall all the runtimes to make sure they're complete and
correct from the MS installers for them.

I'll try that in the morning, but I think they use the same file already
mentioned that MS does.

The MyDrive version I'm installing is 5.3.6.5021

So something is wrong with the graphics.

The title and decoration for the window, is a different call and
subsystem than the "pixmap" that makes the window contents. Perhaps
it has a minimum version of OpenGL ?

Windows 10 will allow graphics as old as XDDM to work.
Whereas the more advanced would be WDDM 3+. As for the vintage of
OpenGL in those two examples, I haven't a clue.

And I don't know if that info is exposed in "dxdiag" or not.
It took GPUZ to mention my setup has OpenGL 4.6 .

*******

The application has "qtdiag.exe" in the Program Files (x86) folder,
which dumps some info of interest to the developers, but not to us.

C:\users\Bullwinkle\AppData\Local\TomTom\HOME3\Logs\qtdiag.log

It would normally be run as qtdiag.exe > qtdiag.log
and redirected to some text file like that.

I ran the application on the Test Machine. it looks like the first
window is actually a web page, and as I don't have an account, my adventure
stops here. So your issue isn't necessarily graphics, it could be
a firewall blocking connection to the TomTom web server.

In Device Manager, check to see whether your driver is
Microsoft Basic Display Adapter (means no hardware driver).

Bingo!

Thanks to Paul and Vanguard for all the help. This page gives what
finally accomplished getting this program working again. I clicked to
use "OpenGL Software" and it restarted and now works!

I could see the signature for "ANGLE" support in the collection
of executables. But it was unclear to me, why it would ever bother
to use ANGLE.

ANGLE is some sort of Google-developed scheme, to support
an OpenGL-like API, on top of DirectX somehow. It might have
been suited to an older piece of equipment or an older OS.
As pure OpenGL didn't always aspire to the "latest version"
and some of the OpenGL would not be suited to running whizzy
modern applications (there were games in the past that would not
run, because "my OpenGL was too old").

libGLESv2.dll \___ What the application thinks it is calling
libEGL.dll /
D3Dcompiler_47.dll --- How the calls are supported on hardware

opengl32sw.dll --- Historically, we're used to "opengl32" without
the "sw" on the end. That's been available for
over 20 years (opengl32.dll) in crusty old
graphic card packages, and you copied that into
your game folder. This, presumably, is yet another
custom glue layer of some sort. Filenames should be
8 characters, rather than the 10 characters of
this splotch.

It's pretty hard to understand what their graphics logic is in Qt5,
whether they have a preference or a flow-chart for selecting a method.
You can be assured though, that they would never call DirectX3D directly,
because that would be admitting to a "non-FOSS" approach to building
a framework.

Something about your drivers, must have made it do this! (Mis-behave).
That's why that log file might indicate something is up.

I would have preferred though, that TomTom keep a startup log,
with info on any "missing" driver content, recorded in plain language.

I used Stellarium (a planetarium application), as a similar Qt5 application,
just to see what little hints it might deliver. I used "procmon" from
Sysinternals, to catch it writing to a logfile, which is how I located
the location of their particular progress logfile. But I guess the two applications
do not share exact details as much as I'd hoped.

when I tried it today, it was not quite all there visibly, so I went
back to that settings page from the hidden tasks and clicked on it to
use OpenGL angle. It then restarted and works just fine again. Weird
as hell.

That same settings page has a checkbox to enable detailed log files.
After checking it it produced four files. dx.diag.log, Launcher.log,
Log.txt, and qtdiag.log.

There does seem to be a lot of information in there contacting their
support staff could have used.
In the end, it seems to me this is a problem from the TomTom software
people in figuring out how to use available Win 10 resources to make
their app work. It's not really a Win 10 problem, just making it run in
the operating system. I realize you can't test every hardware setup,
and that in the end the solution was right in front of me. I'm not the
savviest of users, but far from a novice. Argghh! At least it works
now, or should I say, "For now."

Ok, your final goal is to update the TomTom device, or to update the
Windows tool called "MyDrive"?

I have and use a TomTom, and I don't use MyDrive, because I run Linux
most of the time.

Old TomTom devices had to be connected to a Windows computer running the
program in order to be updated. Relatively recent devices update on
their own, without a computer, connecting to the house WiFi. The only
requirement is that you connect the cable to the TomTom for power.

In my case the TomTom has two connectors: one is a strong magnetic
connection on the cradle, and this model came only with one cradle. The
other one is a standard micro usb connector, which I just connect to an
USB power dongle (not to the computer). I assume you have that.

So don't connect the device to the computer, just to an USB power thing,
and use the TomTom connected to the house WiFi in your sitting room and
then tell the TomTom to update itself.

Notice that when the brand thinks your device is too old and is time for
you to buy a new one, the device fails to update or something "final".

If your TomTom can only be updated via Windows tool, then next time you
buy a TomTom make sure it updates via WiFi and that you can do this
sitting in front of the telly.

How about keeping this condescending drivel in the Linux groups.

Siri says you are a shit stain, no matter which sock you're hiding behind.
