Tumbleweed

/proc/kcore is 128.0TiB in size

and i get warning of disk full

how do I get rid of this crime against reason?

Last thing I did was a huge rsync of 2 external
data directories on 2 external data partitions

something like

rsync -ahcEWXd --info=progress2 /0/d/a/ /0/s/a; rsync -ahcEWXd --
info=progress2 /0/d/h/ /0/s/h

My /proc/kcore is 140 737 471 594 496 bytes. This is not something I've
ever worried about - or even noticed - and
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/21170795/proc-kcore-file-is-huge
says I'm right not to care.

https://askubuntu.com/questions/587531/absurdly-large-proc-kcore-file-what-does-it-mean
may also be interesting.

It is not a file, it doesn't exist on the disk :-D

Well, that's what is wrong, somehow.

I wouldn't either but getting ab alert that my disk is full is 'worthy
of investigation'. To me it IS a problem so when I saw it I went
looking, maybe I should look elsewise

df, or df -h ?
Once you find the offending partition, go there (possibly as root) and
du --max-depth=1 | sort -n
will show you your subdirectories, sorted on size, largest last.
Traverse down the tree until you find something really offensive.

Somehow my rsync commands synced created folders under the root tree
instead of mountpoints of mounted drives. So I was writing to the
partition mounted as / until space ran out. Finger up the old bazooka again!

My notes are a little confusing, I think I shudda put a trailing / after

/0/s/a and /0/s/h i.e. /0/s/a/ /0/s/h/

You certainly should look elsewhere, that file is "virtual", it doesn't
"really" exist.

Unless you told rsync to backup /proc. In that case, the backup will
contain dozens of useless files, and at least one really huge.

rsync $OPTIONS --one-file-system --link-dest=$PREVIO \
--exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/dev --exclude=/sys \
--exclude=/proc --exclude=/run \
/ $DEST

Hard to say not knowing what each letter actually is.

Hint: I look, seconds after firing rsync, where the files are actually
going to, using 'mc'.

they are mountpoints for data drive partitions

I know that brevity* is great but the trailing slash
manpage should be more explicit, like "don't do this
unless you want to copy a whole server into a mountpoint
under which nothing is mounted you idiot" ..sorta thing

*
had a teacher once, entered class, moved over to
the pedestal, opened his folder, put on his specs
and looked up at us saying:

"Ladies and gentlemen, today's lesson will be one
about the importance of brevity".

Then he took off his specs, closed his folder, and
walked out.

I'm not too rsync wise yet

And they were not mounted. Typical issue, happens millions of times.

You should, in your backup script, verify the mount succeeded.

mount /abc
MOUNT=`mount | grep /abc`
if ! test -n "$MOUNT" ; then
echo "*** ERROR: could not mount, aborting"
echo
echo $MOUNT
exit
fi

:-)

The trailing slash is just about creating the initial folder on the
destination or not.

Precisely because I do not trust my rsync skills, I check seconds after
firing it where it is actually writing the files. Not where I'm
absolutely sure it writes to, but where is it actually writing to.

"engineering is what allows us to sleep one on top of another"

Yeah, like so many other times, maybe a little
experimenting with small content beforehand would
have been ..salutary

I need it. What I'm trying to get to (once it all
works faultlessly) is to update existing backups
of which I like to keep 3 on separate disks.
I'm not at the script level yet, this incident
was a double command with ; in between. I was and
am sure the destination was mounted but obviously
it couldn't have been.

I'm a control freak, when I stagger out of bed to
dump caffeine I want to see how far it got

There's a simpler way, which includes neither the invocation of
mount(1) nor any output redirection into grep(1).

When you are certain that the volume in question is not mounted, simply
create a single empty file with an indicative name in the directory
intended as the mountpoint, e.g.

# touch "${directory}/NOT_MOUNTED"

Then, all you have to do later in order to check whether the volume is
mounted or not is test for the existence of said file.

if [ -f "${directory}/NOT_MOUNTED" ]
then
echo "Volume not mounted. Aborting..."
else
rsync ${options} "${source}/" "${directory}/"
fi

The structure...

command1 ; command2

.... means "run command1 and then run command2". In your case, a better
way might be...

command1 && command2

.... which means "run command1, and then run command2 if and only if
command1 exited without an error."

During the summer I'm generally out of town 3 or 4 days per week. I travel to
my little cabin with a 2TB and a 5TB. Each having variations on a backup. The
cabin isn't that far off of pavement but there's no internet or TV service so
the 2TB has music, lots TV shows and lots movies on it. The 5TB has the music
and a complete backup of all the TV shows and movies. Plus an encrypted backup
of /home on it, just in case I get separated from it. I keep another set of
those in a little quasi-fireproof lock-box away from my abode.

When I leave town for the summer/winter I carry those same drives, and a 8TB
which has more stuff, in my carry on.

Lots of drives, lots of backups, a real need for scripts. I've created a
script, run in cron, replicating the ~/bin directory across to all the computers
in my home networks. Got tired of needing a script on a computer and not
finding it.

Yes, I know this method. But it can be "perverted" by creating the flag
file in the wrong place, or deleting it.

Directly checking for the mount is safer. Doesn't depend on other things.

(actually, I use the "not_mounted" flag file for visual indication when
using a browser)

--progress is way to verbose. IIRC it lists each and every file, so
that possible error messages fly out of the screen and you never see
them, unless you are full time watching the screen.

The semi colon (;) in your description just means run the command
before ; then run command after ;.

I would have forgone the ; and just put the second command on the next
line just to make it more straight forward reading.

Also makes is easier to follow when I have to use bash -x some_script
to debug what is happening.

The time taken to test results from each command and print
what failed is well spent if/when something fails at a later
point in time.

I find the command "script" handy for watching and logging what a script
is doing and doing post command analyses. The command "tee" can also be used.

Script example:

script -c "rsync whatever" rsync.log
if [ $? -ne 0 ] ; then
mail -s "APP_XX FAILURE: rsync whatever failed" root < rsync.log
echo "aborted APP XX"
exit 1
fi

rm --force rsync.log
