Who wants that? DOCX to PDF conversion is what I want! People will
cope with me sending them more compatible formats like RTF, but
it's the junk they send me that I need to deal with (at the moment
often by just not viewing it).

Yes I know Libre Office does a workable job of opening DOCX files,
but I don't actually use that much because I prefer Ted and other
more lightweight individual office programs. What I really want is
a stand-alone command-line converter, but the Libre Office devs
seem to be the only people who can stand the task of deciphering
M$'s current document formats, and all Linux converter programs
are just interfaces to Libre Office (which I assume means the
converter code in LO isn't easily separable).

I just went through this, someone sending me a "docx" file. I refuse
to deal with Microsoft formats, so I informed the sender that their
attachment was in some kind of weird proprietary format that I couldn't
open. When they responded that it was just Word (as though everyone
in the world uses Word), I informed them that I do not use Microsoft
products and they would need to provide the document in a universal
format such as PDF or plain text. (Since most internet users today
have no concept of 'plain text' they send a PDF.)

If I need a PDF from any format ad am lazy I use LibreOffice in headless
mode. It converts in the background. Linux already comes with it own
suite of tools to convert various text formats.

If this is a person paying you you might never hear from him/her
again. Not because they insist of send MS formats but because they don't
know better.

Many customers send me MS formats. LibreOffice loads them usually without
a problem. I send back DOCX (MS format) because most office software can
deal wit it.

I don't think so, and the software seems to be open-source.

I found out about that while searching for a stand-alone program,
but I don't want such a big bloated (often buggy) program on all my
PCs just so that I can convert docx to something sensible. I want
a nice little quick-loading tool with minimal dependencies. There
used to be simple tools to convert from M$ formats, but the
developers all seem to have given up, probably for good reasons.

Be aware that a Libreoffice docx export might look VASTLY different in
Word than what you intend it to look like.

Really, since I cant get an SSD less than 128Gbytes I might as well fill
it up with big bloated buggy programs.

(The data lives on the house server).
I mean it's like the ridiculoous argument that we need 'nuclear power
AND renewables' I mean if you have sufficient nuclear power to run
everything for when the wind and the sun have both gone to bed, what is
the pint of adding unstable intermittent 'renewables' to it? To save
uranium? at $0.003c a unit? who cares?

Added cost and no added benefit.

Installing Libre office is relatively cost free given the SSD size, and
with today's CPUS and RAM its gonna be fast to load and fast to run in
spite of being written in TreacleCode™.

Other issues start to dominate, like how interoperable it is and how
support for it is extensive and so on.

You want a "simple" tool to convert docx to PDFs.

That seems to me like a contradiction in terms.
I think you're going to need the full weight of libreoffice to
accomplish the task.

It says something about "Pricing". There might be a free version, but

It's supposed to be based on XML. There are countless simple
programs designed for reading in XML, I've even written a couple
myself.

True DOCX is probably obscenely complicated in comparison, and Libre
Office probably uses its own layout engine to cope with it, but
that still at least means that all the GUI, macro scripting, etc.
stuff is there for nothing. Ideally you should be able to translate
the layout info of DOCX into equivalent PDF layout info without
needing the document rendering (display) code either. There are
simple programs (relative to Libre Office, I am counting Ghostscript
and Poppler as simple) to give me text from PDFs, PDFs from HTML
(html2ps + pstopdf), text from RSS feeds... why should I accept that
the same things can't be done for DOCX?

Anyway so long as people send them to me, I'll _want_ such a tool,
whether it's practical or not. They don't usually contain anything
that couldn't be done in an RTF doc anyway.

I want programs to be fastER to run when I have a faster CPU and
RAM. Click "Ted" from the menu and wham! Up it comes. Not the
loading bar animation, the actual program. By running TreacleCode
you're just ensuring that you never get the real potential out of
improved hardware.

Plus the other thing is that I don't actually own an SSD - but
that's because I don't need one, because I don't run TreacleCode.
Same with the latest CPUs and RAM. Money saved.

RTFs and PDFs are all you really need for documents so far as the
stuff I encounter goes. Spreadsheets can be trickier, I sometimes
unleash a format shotgun and spew out HTML, CSV, and PDF copies of
the spreadsheet I want to attach in the hope that one of them works
for the recipient.

I'm pretty sure those docx files contain lots of xml.
I don't think that makes the job of understanding thousands of different
markup tags much easier.

I think an intimate understanding of the layout is required to
produce an accurate PDF.

True that the display and edit code is no help. I've never tried to use
Libreoffice in batch so I don't know how much of that ends up being
loaded in during a batch run.

I don't really need an accurate layout, and as I say the people who
send me these things don't generally use fancy layout features
beyond what RTF handles anyway. A rough conversion equivalent to
html2ps' sort of quality is all that I'd ask for, just so that I can
read the text and possiby inline images.

I read people's HTML-formatted email content in a roughly converted
text-only rendered view anyway, I don't need much more for their
DOCX attachments.

Never really had that problem. Anyhow I'm at the point in my career
(towards the end, semi-retired) where I can pick and choose who I want
to work for and what I want to do. If someone inists on working with
someone who will accept Microsoft-formatted documents they are free
to go elsewhere.

About 10 years ago I took a closer look at .docx files. It turns out
that on the surface they're just .zip files with a different extension.
When you unzip one, you get a complicated directory tree containing
various XML files (e.g. the document and numerous support files), plus
whatever images (in .png format) are included in the document. True
to form, Microsoft has tried to create a write-only version of XML by
omitting all CR and LF characters, making each file one tremendously
long line. Presumably .xlsx files have gotten the same loving treatment.

On the few occasions when I have to read a .docx or .xlsx file,
I find that LibreOffice works well enough. If not, I tell the
provider to use a more standard format.

Indeed. I'm surprised no one has perused through the LibreOffice
codebase to isolate a `libwordconverter` library or simple standalone
tool.

Or maybe someone has. I don't know and am too lazy to look it up right
now.

I think the problem is that Libre Office will convert DOCX to its
own internal layout representaion, then export from that. The code
they've written may not be easily suited to converting from one
format to another without that intermediate stage where it relies
on their whole document 'engine'.

I made a multi-hour effort to find such a thing a few years ago and
as already noted all I found were command-line interfaces to the
full Libre Office. I _think_ I also had a look at the LO sources
to see whether what you're proposing might be approachable as a
project that I could do, and it turned out to be so unapproachable
that I've even wiped my memory of the experience. That could also
just have been because their programming style didn't agree with me
though, I really don't remember.

I still have an Ivy Bridge workstation (with fast spinning rust drives)
and LibreOffice is effing slow to start up. Seems like worst bloatware
in linux by a mile.

fit an SSD then.

I used to do Usenet on a Wyse 50 attached to a 388 running SCO Unix.
Times change.

We're waiting for you to write something better.

Oh, wait, you're just criticizing without being able to do any better
aren't you?

Although not as capable, Abiword is much lighter and may do the job for you
depending on your needs.
