Bought Netfetch as it seems POPstar won't work with imap which the domain
host (123-reg)that handles my email has changed to.

Got imap working OK on Thunderbird, but using the same settings (as best I
can since everyone seems to use different names for the same thing) but no
luck with Netfetch. It says 'connecting to then logging in to
imap.123-reg' but then connection lost. Is their an idiots guide to
configuring it somewhere, as I can't find a help file.

I've set in choices:-

Account name (my full name)

Local user (dave)

Pop3 mail server (imap.123-reg.co.uk)

Port (993)

User name (***@davesound.co.uk) This is the mail box address Thunderbird
accesses and I've forwarded the address I do use to that on the 123-reg
control panel.

Password (**) same as in Thunderbird.

Ok, I'm going to stick my neck out here.

My map of the world says that neither popstar or Netfetch can handle
imap. They are both pop clients not imap clients.

Having said that, I suppose there may be no law which prevents a
server offering both services so may have a name imap.123-reg.co.uk
but I think even that unlikely.

I thinks you need to set your mail client to
pop server: pop.123-reg.co.uk
All of my pop3 accounts use port: 995.

Please try that.

Bob.

Sorry to follow up my own post but two other things...

Firstly pop.123-reg.co.uk does indeed ping and has an ip of
94.136.40.233. I therefore think that is a working pop3 server.

I also notice you have your own mail domain so that may change the
server name you should use. Your account info should tell you but it
may that your mail server is something like:

mail.davesound.co.uk or
pop.davesound.co.uk or
pop3.davesound.co.uk or

something like that. Still think 995 is the likely pop3 port though
but you need to switch on SSL.

cheers

My mail box at 123-reg is called (username)@davesound.co.uk
I then forward dave@ (etc) to it.

Netfetch offers SSL or STARTTLS. Tried both using port 993 (which 123-reg
says to use) and 995.

I can get things to work by forwarding to my BT address which still works
just fine with POPstar and Pluto. But seems a long winded way of doing
things.

I would expect you should be able to use pop3 directly to the server
and pull your email provided their server is configured to do so for
your mail domain.

I think port 993 is for imap and neither netfetch or popstar can use
that as they are pop not imap. As far as I'm aware, only Messenger
Pro is imap capable within RISC OS.

So for RISC OS unless you get messenger pro you can forget port 993.
Your best bet is port 995 and SSL.

So then you have the pop3 server name to worry about.
as I said pop.123-reg.co.uk does ping and if you had an email account
of fred@123-reg.co.uk I would expect that server name to work.

But as i understand it, you have your own mail domain and it is
common for the server names used for such accounts to match the
domain name, mine certainly do.

Hence why I thought mail.davesound.co.uk may be your server, that's
the pattern with mine. Yours doesn't ping though.

Please check with supplier if you have a special named server for pop
to match your domain name.

Does having your email account forwarded to BT stop pop3 access
directly?

You need to ask you hosting company some questions.

Cheers,

Bob.

Hi Dave,

As explained to you only last month Netfetch does not do IMAP only POP.

The fact that 123.reg says to use port 993, which is the encrypted and
secure port for IMAP, is saying that indeed the server imap.123-reg.co.uk
only does IMAP.

The clue is in the name of the email server, though as Bob says sometimes
the same server does IMAP/POP3.

As previously explained you need MessengerPro which has a IMAP client to
use to IMAP servers.

The only other solution is as you have set up is to forward the email to
BT and download it via POP3.

The fact that NetchFetch does SLS/TLS is not helpful to you as it is POP3
over SSL/TLS that it does, or more specifically Hermes does, not IMAP
over SSL/TLS.

This all started after 123-reg said I had to change to imap.

I have Messenger Pro as part of the package I bought. As I was told
Netfetch couldn't integrate with Pluto.

On manage email at the 123-reg control panel, my standard email package
shows (username)@davesound.co.uk as the one I access. All other
@davesound.co.uk addresses are forwarded via that.

As I said, it all works with Thunderbird.

That was the workround I used when 123-reg changed to imap. Forwarded
everything to my BT address. Which allowed me to continue using
POPstar/Pluto.

You don't know the history of trying that. ;-)

Yes, fully agree so far.

Do we *know* there is no way to download via pop3 or is it just a
case of we've not managed it yet?

This is what I don't get...

They have a server called pop.123-reg.co.uk which pings. I would be
very surprised if it wasn't capable of serving pop3 email downloads.

What is it about Dave's mail domain setup that prevents pop3 download
as as it looks like the company hosting his domain do use pop3?

I've been using the two together, ever since I bought Pluto at Wakefield in
the RISC PC days - one Readme file is dated 1996!)

Hi Bob,

As Dave previously stated last month he was told by reg.123 the POP3
service was ending and to change to IMAP by the reg.123 technical help
team.

Though there was some confusion on what actual POP3 server was closing as
they had two POP3 servers.

He also had an issue with his account that I believe he sorted.

It would be good for Dave to confirm what the end result was with the
advice he got from reg.123 as indeed that may help to know if he can
indeed download via the POP3 service still or indeed if it is closing and
when.

NetFetch is just a wrapper for things like Hermes which are fetchers and
should work the same as PopStar to POP3 accounts and therefore should work
with Pluto.

If you have MessengerPro then you need to login in with the server option
set to Messenger IMAP/NNTP Client and then set that up with you details
from reg.123.

In the built in help for Messenger take a look at the Network support link
on how to set up some things.

Also note that setting up the IMAP client means you need to manually enter
details in a file rather than do that from the GUI.

You still need SMTP element as well for sending this can be done via the
built in Hermetic element /Hermes/Netfetch as you would normally though
Hermetic does not do multiple SMTP servers and hence why you may have been
advised to get Netfetch with the more capable SMTP built in.

You can set up the SMTP element via Netfetch and also tailor it to which
email domain you want for which ever account re-123 or BT and get it to
automatically send via a specific one depending on which ever account you
login in to in MessengerPro etc.

The actual configuration file is in !NewsDir.RemoteNB.Config and will look
something like this once set up.

Version=3.13
HostName="Your Host name"
Domain="What you have been told by reg-123 or use the example in the
MessengerPro help file"
MailDomain= "Your email domain" see what reg.123 told you
Organization=Home
IMAPServer=imap.123-reg.co.uk:993 * If what you have been told is
correct*
SMTPServer="What reg-123 told you":587
NNTPServer="What ever is your News server"
PrivateFolders=
PublicFolders=
GroupPatterns=
PollInterval=30
ConnectionTimeout=0
ReportAttachments=false
AsyncLogin=false
IMAPSSLMode=3
SMTPSSLMode=2

It will also set up a user file with your details including password if
you save it. If you don't then you would login in with the password you
actually have for your email account.

I must admit the built in help and MessengerPro manual are a bit light on
actually setting up the IMAP bits so I guess a call to RComp may help at
some stage if you get stuck.

Right so there is a way to get the GUI up and that is to manually run
!RemoteNB which can be found in !Messenger.Servers.

You can set the Site/Server and Users via it's menu options and then quit
and restart MessengerPro in IMAP/NNTP client mode.

Might be good to have a section on RemoteNB in the help/server though I
am not discounting I am wrong and just can't see it!

PLuto is quite happy with NetFetch as long as you are using POP3.
Unfortunately, Pluto cannot do IMAP.
