I have never quite understood why the LM team introduced Hypnotix, or
for that matter a number of other LM applications. Today I tried
Hypnotix for the first time. My LM 21.3 Cinnamon system froze
immediately when I tried to watch some (news) broadcast. Exit
Hypnotix. What a waste of time and effort. And why? Who needs it?

It works here 20.3, but it dishes up movies that I would not waste my

It has an MPV helper, which may have something to do
with putting video on the screen. There is mention of OpenGL.
Clem probably did not write MPV, and he's just reusing it.

What kind of video card have you got ?

Running Nouveau or NVidia ?

The "inxi" application will have details for you.

inxi -F
inxi -G

I no longer bother with TV, even though the other machine
has a very nice tuner card. I would be un-inclined to watch
IPTV.

The code also mentions yt-dlp. But that is not likely to
destabilize a PC. For a lockup, I'd be looking at your
video card and/or OpenGL details.

If you were to set up the console on an RS232 port, you
will likely find the machine is still running, the kernel
is there, and you can issue commands if you want. It'll just
be Xorg or XWayland that is wedged. And it could be MPV library
that did it.

If there is some other program that uses MPV.py, perhaps
you could run a test on that program, and see if the wedging
also occurs there. Maybe if you trace down the origins of
MPV.py, they have a test built into the thing (A Big Buck Bunny
test, say).

At times like this I do wonder about humans. Some folks have created a
programme which some others might find useful. If you do not then just
ignore it. Linux is about choice, as is often pointed out.

Well, it froze a computer, so no matter what you think
of the concept, it's worthy of debugging so it does not
affect something else.

I expect the computer didn't freeze, just the display subsystem.

MPV is not the cause of the problem afaics. It works fine on its own
or as SMPlayer's media engine (SMPlayer can use mpv or mplayer, the
user's choice).
My video card is an AMD oldie. It has always worked well with the
various video players and web browsers I've used.
Anyway, I don't really need Hypnotix and have uninstalled it.

Some (more recent) comments here also:

I don't really need Hypnotix. VLC can do the job also.
The LM team shouldn't waste time on this project and focus on the
actual OS imho.

I have been having trouble getting MythTV to work in a non-standard
environment. Worried that part of ther problem may be a poor signal I
decided to test the theory by trying alternative applications.

My usual alternative was Kaffeine as that is simple to set up. But I saw
the exchange concerning Hypnotix so I thought that I would give it a
try.

Possibly due to a poor signal due to the extended coax lead, I could
only get a handful of stations to resolve. Two scottish stations, a
childrens station and GB News. All gave very good pictures but I
couldn't tell which if any were HD channels.

Can it record?

I will give it a better test when I move the computer to its intended
location, under my desk.

I have it installed but never use it. It does NOT record. According to
the last info from the program it has 1614  tv channels, but only some
of them work, maybe it has to do with the time of day and the different
time zones. It is ok if you only want to watch some tv on your computer,
but a tv is a tv and a wide screen tv is much nicer than a computer
monitor, pity to all those addicted to their phones and that 2 inch by 3
inch screen and those hi-fi speaker.

I used to use w_scan plus VLC for tuner test (Hauppauge dual tuner).

w_scan will give channels and frequencies.

https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/W_scan # older

https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/W_scan_cpp # old

The VLC has a place to enter the channel
frequency and you can watch TV. That doesn't
work in the Windows version of VLC but it works
in the Linux version of VLC. The difficulty in Windows
is likely the "framework" and whether there's an interface
that works with everything. MCE has been gone for a while,
and any other subsystem they may have cooked up, might
not have encouraged developers to hop on board.

My tuner only has the driver from the manufacturer. The
driver is not on catalog.update.microsoft.com (not auto-loaded),
and the Linux FW for the tuner is missing. Which means
when I test, I have to screw around to find the FW file :-)
But this is mostly some kind of stance by the hardware maker.
When I bought the tuner, it took about ten days before
I had a CD with the necessary software, and I verified the
hardware was working by using Linux (w_scan at the time).
