Is anybody using the software? I'm kind of interested in playing around with
it, but not sure exactly where to start.

Hi
I use it for ADS-B and plane tracking (runs 24/7).

Also dabbled a bit for HAB tracking and weather satellite data.

The RTL SDR USB dongles I have are from nooelec use them with gqrx as
well.

Well I ordered a dongle, a NooElec NESDR Nano 3, and an antenna bundle, a
RaTLSnake M6 v2. Found some gqrx software in a RPM format and downloaded it, to
my ~/Download directory known as "Here" in the list of repositories, it wants
some libraries which are available at the more standard places. When the
hardware shows up next week I'll plug it all together and hopefully it'll all run.

Hi
That should get you going :) don't forget to install rtl-sdr, then can
run rtl_test to check device.

A fm radio script I put together... https://susepaste.org/81814346

This is not looking good. I started trying to install software and quickly ran
into dependency problems. I see that you're running Tumbleweed and I'm running
Leap 15.4. Could this be the reason I'm having so many problems? Did you build
gqrx or did you find a RPM?
At the moment I've run into not being able to find libgnuradio-osmosdr.so.0.2.0
and I can't figure out where or what contains it. Consequently the install of
gqrx is telling me there will be broken dependencies.

Any time :)

Oh, add your user to the rtlsdr group too, logout/login.

I have a Dell tablet setup here (albeit MicroOS Desktop) running gqrx,
listening to the local airport automated weather, need to add the CTAF
channel once see some aircraft flying..

I'm a little old to be starting on the Instrument/Commercial license. I was
about a week away from starting, back when I was 40, when I had a heart
attack...and there went my medical. I had a SEL and SES, plus some time flying
skis just for fun. OK, technically I guess I have a SEL/SES I'm just not
current by a few decades. :-) I plan on setting up something for the various
Anchorage frequencies since this will tell me when I should head for the airport
when friends/relatives are flying in to visit.

Hi
So dump1090-fa and virtualradar (a mono application) is what I use for
ADS-B tracking, but also feed to FlightRadar, openSky and PlaneFinder
(It has a built in viewer). I also have multiple rtl-sdr's so can
experiment.

If your going to track aircraft long term, a ADS-B filter, low
noise amplifier and proper ADS-B antenna are worth it, I get out over
250 nautical miles in winter, around 200 when the trees get their leaves
back. I would put the antenna up higher, but always worried about
lightning strikes around here, so just above the roof line.
