My Time at Sandrock, the sequel to My Time at Portia, became available
in Early Access on Steam today for US$24.99. I enjoyed Portia and want
Sandrock, at some point. The current price is said by the developer to
be below what the final release version will be sold for.

GOG lists Sandrock as "coming soon", so apparently they don't do Early
Access. I'd prefer to buy from GOG over Steam but pragmatically cheaper
would win out. Except its Early Access and I don't know how long it
would be before an EA copy would get updated to the production version
and I'm not a fan of paying to be a beta tester.

So, what to do, what to do....

Wait?

Even if the game comes out for higher than $24,99 (probably $29,99 if
"My Time at Portia's" price is anything to go by), eventually it will
go on sale, or even be made available for free (which is how I got
"Portia" on Steam and Epic). End result: you pay less (or nothing),
don't bother with unpaid beta-testing, and are ensured that - when you
do get the product - it isn't going to be abandoned long before it is
finished.

(I hate companies that use false-scarcity tactics to pressure people
into buying stuff; it's scummy.)

for the link and correction.

But 'My Time at Sandrock' still isn't on that list. :P

"Wait" is not advice one expects from you. :P

I guess I'll have to hem-n-haw on this for a while longer.

Then you haven't been paying attention. ;-)

I frequently advocate for waiting rather than rushing out to buy.
Given the surplus of excellent games available already, and a (IMHO)
general decline in quality/value of modern games, I rarely feel the
need to buy a game immediately. All the more so since so often these
games are offered for free if you wait long enough. In fact, the last
game I bought on release was... gosh, six years ago! Since then, I've
only added new games if they're on sale or free.

On the other hand,if you point out that I'm the one who pressures
people into adding MORE games to their library, well, guilty as
charged. Quantity, not immediacy is my watchword ;-)

Generally I stir clear of early access but I have bought two game in EA.
Sunless Sea as I just really liked the concept and Gloomhaven as it was
mostly finished except they had to add the grand campaign from the
boardgame but it already had what was called Guildmaster mode.

I suppose the question is, is it currently in a state with another
content and will you be happy playing through part of it again when it's
finally released.

Another option is to buy it from the Epic Game Store, where because of
their "Mega Sale", you can get it for 25% off with the coupon.

If you liked Sunless Sea you should try the original game:

I've played thru Portia twice now so I suspect I won't have a problem
playing thru altered early parts of Sandrock. The developers' comments
on the game's page in Steam makes it pretty clear they still have a lot
to do before its a "finished" game. But I think most of my reason for
wanting to risk Early Access is boredom. I want to play _something_ but
nothing that I currently have is really interesting me right now. And
it would be nice to spoil myself a little bit after so many years of
pinching pennies.

I've done good in this world. Now I'm tired and just want to be a cranky
dirty old man.
