I have a windows card game from way back. Win7 at least, if not XP.
I really like it and even in wine it works great, at least wine 8.0

Today I just got an update to wine-stable 9.0.
Now there is a problem with the display in the game, and I'm not sure
who to post a bug to. I'm hoping someone here can direct me. Granted
it was wine 9.0 that caused the bug, but is it Linux windowing
system/code that is not doing the display properly now?

Here is the before, wine 8.0 screenshot. Its the top left corner of the
game window. There is a round logo, playing card. Then under the
titlebar there is the toolbar, typical arrangement.
However the author place a shortcut or quick access bar on top of the
titlebar. The logo also overlays the titlebar.

https://i.postimg.cc/J4XjftQr/Game-in-Wine-8-0.png

Now the title bar in wine 9 runs all the way across the screen and 1/2
the logo is covered as well as all those quick access buttons. When I
needed the undo, that's when I noticed it.

So... any ideas folks?

Can you roll back or re-install the 8.0 version over the 9.0?

I'm not sure I can. Wine 9 installed fine, but when the game launched I
was prompted to install mono. Not from the synaptic manager, I just
just run a refresh and did not find an update for mono, so I don't think
it's using the on in repros. I let the program download and install. So
I'm not sure how to uninstall (or if I need to) that particular piece.

Wine 9 only seems to show in this one program. I have 3 other programs
and they seem to work fine. This game has an issue with wanting to take
command of the screen. If I do a screenshot, that window will not
focus. The game won't give up the screen. I have to minimize it. I
can't even click on the screen shot dialog in the panel and bring it
forward, it's just a demanding game. It's a program with multiple
games, kinda like Kpat or AisleRiot. But when you try to change games
the pick dialog comes focus and the fullscreen game behind gets cropped.
You lose the right 25% and the bottom 10% of the window. It comes back
when you close that dialog, but it's weird.

All this is just this one program. I have a password database program,
Greenfish Icon editor, and notepad++. They all work just like they did,
maybe a slightly different feel or look. Maybe I just think this because
of the game program that's so problematic.

I'll stick with Wine 9. I can use Ctrl-Z and Ctrl-Y to redo and undo.
Everything is on the main toolbar, not just that quick access bar.

Well as far as I remember there is a place at wine.org where you can
file bugs...
Having said that, the overall poor state wine is after decades... I
wouldn't hold my breath for much improvement.
When I need Win I go for virtualization or a real install but I couldn't
care less about games.
It might be overkill to go this way for a card game...

It sure is overkill. I don't play but maybe twice a day. I can get
around with the typical keyboard shortcut keys. I do have it install in
a VM but that's worse to get to for a few minutes of playtime.

I let the program download and install.  So I'm not sure how to uninstall (or if I need to) that particular piece.

I have to minimize it.  I can't even click on the screen shot dialog in the panel and bring it forward, it's just a demanding game.  It's a program with multiple games, kinda like Kpat or AisleRiot.  But when you try to change games the pick dialog comes focus and the fullscreen game behind gets cropped. You lose the right 25% and the bottom 10% of the window.  It comes back when you close that dialog, but it's weird.

As for font rendering, one screenshot was taken on my live system, the
other was on a VM before I upgraded to Wine 9. So the VM may add to
what you see and the choice of fonts in setup there too.

I read the article above and tried the two settings, and it does change
the situation but probably for the worse.

Without windows controlling the display, I lose the min/max/close icons
on the titlebar, and the little quick access is there but only via a
little >> icon. Seems it's minimized somewhere and I have to click the
>> then the little toolbar appears. So it adds an extra click. About
the same # of clicks if I just use the standard toolbar and click 'game'
and get the options. At least with Mint controlling things I get the
minimize / close icons.

Odd though how the wine window overtakes this system and I don't get a
task in the panel and other windows won't come to focus. But again,
this is all isolated to this one game that is so old it's quite possible
the code is a mess and this is the best I'll ever get. I'm hunting for
an updated version.

I played with proxmox VM, that is really great, fully working with all
the hardware support. Although I haven't done it myself YET! I going to
use it as my default system because everything works 100%.
Besides that, making snapshots and rebuilds are a matter of minutes!
I tried it and it works.

How (and why)? My LM 21.3 has Wine 6.03, which hasn't caused any
problems with the few MS Windows programs I use on a more or less
regular basis.

Since it happens only on this program, and the program is old, really
old, I just scratch it up to compatibilities with Wine. It works in
real Windows, and all other Windows programs work in Wine. I can't come
up with how or why. Obviously there is something the program/programmer
did that Wine handles wrong. Maybe the .net libraries, or Mono that I
downloaded and installed.

Indeed. Updates to WINE are often problematic and should be approached
with care.
I avoid updates because something always breaks.

Actually wine 9 works better. The windows decorations are the first
thing I noticed.
I'm completely convinced it's just the one program that's faulty.

hopefully it is only that one program that has issues with wine 9.0. i'm
running wine 7 and i will only update it if i have to. based on past bad
experience, it's a good idea to wait a few weeks when an update comes
along *before* installing it.

The program is very usable. I think your idea is what I'm waiting for.
Maybe an update will come along and fix it.

I'm not, because a popular genealogy program like RootsMagic works quite
well in Wine 6 and 7, but not in 8 or 9. And that seems to be, because
some part that is essential for the UI rendering was removed in 8.

I'm not exactly sure what that is, but for Wine 6 and 7, installing GDI+
was enough to fix some minor rendering issues, and in Wine 8 and 9, that
doesn't help. And adding Direct 2 D or 3 D DLL's doesn't help either.

Do you mean the automatic load, offered by winetricks, or during setup?

If so, I think yes, but I didn't try a manual install.

I was talking about the load offered. When I opened my first program
it popped up that it needed loading. And I did.

Well sorta. I found some directions how to load 8.0.2 and it worked.

Short explanation is I purged all the wine* items in update manager,
then ran the script they suggested. I added the "sudo apt-mark hold
winehq-stable" they suggested to stop any updates.

I can keep abreast of the progress in a VM and if they fix it, I may go
back. The only fix, minor, was this goofy 1 program would go fullscreen
in ver9 but ver8 it leaves about 10 pixels short of fullscreen. Minor
issue compared to having the toolbar all messed up.

Note: I of coursed edited the first 2 lines. 8.0.2 and wine-stable

And a warning, make a shell script and put this at the end.

sudo apt-mark hold winehq-stable

I may be a bit paranoid, and it's been a few days, but I did this to one
vm and before I could go in and mark version 8 on hold, update manager
came along and had an update from 8 -> 9 ready for me.

So my downgrade script has this line at the end. All one fell swoop,
downgrade and mark!!!
