I bought a Dell Latitude 7440, I believe a 2023 model. All my previous
Latitudes have accepted mint without too much problem but I am stuck
with this one. I can boot from my mint USB stick and then the Install
Mint icon starts, I choose the language and keyboard then get an error
saying the disk isn't big enough and oddly reporting the size of the USB
stick, not the internal SSD.

I have carefully double checked that secure boot is off and that Windows
11 fast start is disabled. There is no Legacy Mode option in the Bios. I
shrank the C: drive in windows to clear space for mint so there is lots
of unallocated space.

What next?

Press Ctrl+Alt+F2 (or other numbers) and you will be in a console.

Run lsblk and see if the SSD is being detected properly. If it is and
NVMe SSD, the name is maybe nvme0n1.

Ta. SSD not detected or recognised. I am going to try the mint 'EDGE'
iso this evening. Maybe better for new hardware.

In Windows administrator terminal

powercfg /h off

This seems to disable Hibernate S4, as well as Fast Startup.
This should be demonstrated when you check.

powercfg /availablesleepstates

https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3SyBmLN8Uetp7zF6puAsaj-1200-80.jpg.webp

Now, if this helps, you can turn Hibernate back on later,
as it is necessary for handling "no battery left" while
in S3 Sleep. There is a separate control for disabling Fast Boot,
but it'll take too long to find it :-) I usually hammer the thing,
by just turning off the hiberfil.sys entirely.

Next test, is accidental or purposeful encryption, a specialty of Microsoft screwups.
I'm on a Home SKU, specifically for testing screwups. Machines with a TPM offer
an opportunity for fun in this regard, but if you have been incidentally encrypted,
you can log into your MSA account to get the key. You should always keep the key
somewhere (until this baloney is removed).

manage-bde -help # To see program options
manage-bde -status # Since you self-installed, it really should not be ON

Apparently FDE is an option for crypto, and while Home cannot install Bitlocker
(it's a Pro feature), and OEM OS installation might turn on FDE or so. And
the manage-bde may give some idea whether you're in a mess or not. You can see
my sample partition is fine.

In any copy of Mint I've tried, this is available.

gnome-disks

That should prove the storage can be seen.

You can ls /dev and see what devices exist with "n" as the first letter.
This person has made it further than you, and has a couple partitions
on a systemd-named device. /dev/nvme0n1p6

It's not really clear from that, whether they only have one sled
on the thing or not. That's a pretty limiting config.

The description here, claims in effect that the thing has a SATA capability.
This is from the year 2019. I don't think this is the same machine.

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1180881/i-dont-see-ssd-in-ubuntu-install-on-dell-latitude-7400-with-rst

"The problem is a known limitation when working with Intel RST
and the AHCI+RAID mode set by default in the BIOS/firmware on
newer systems (especially Dells).

This is Intel Rapid Storage technology, but Ubuntu can't work
with it. In the firmware of the system you have to disable the
AHCI+RAID SATA mode and switch it to just AHCI mode. That will
let Ubuntu see the drive.
"

I would be extra careful to review what devices are in the thing.
It's a Dell, so who knows how convoluted the storage device
detection is, in the BIOS screen. At least on my desktop here,
it tends to list what devices are detect-able at POST time.

While in past years, storage could be examined underneath plates
on the bottom of a laptop, some modern machines insist you lift
the keyboard to look. There may be a service manual for the thing.
I'm guessing it is accessible by taking the entire bottom off.
There is an "I/O board" on the left (opposite the M.2 on the right),
which takes a WWAN card. Maybe there is a storage option there, but
I could not quickly see that in the manual.

I have a Dell here, that only supports one USB device. If you
have two USB bootable sticks plugged in, you cannot select between
them at boot time. You can select USB or Nothing, those are your
choices.

Summary: It's new and it's shiny. Could be FDE engaged. manage-bde...
That is all.

I have never had a nearly new laptop so I didn't know there was an Edge
install for recent hardware. When I used it everything worked.
Thanks all the same!

I await your result with some anticipation. I've got a new laptop (not a
Dell) with an NVMe SSD coming early next week! I downloaded the 21.3
EDGE iso yesterday.

Presumably your device is properly declared as an NVMe then.
