I don't know much about soccer except it was forced onto us American
kids over 50 years ago when I was one. Still going on I think.

But I would like to learn more about it. The Football Manager series
seems to get good reviews.

Sci-fi author John Ringo on the differences between American football
and soccer.

"In football, there are constant pauses where both sides reconsolidate.
The leader, dealing with advisors out of the battle frenzy, determines
the moves for the next assault while casualties are removed and resupply
(WATERBOY!) is managed without interfering with the planning. Once the
plan is established, it is sent to all the lower units who move into
position and on H Hour begin the assault. There is an objective, but the
objective is rarely reached, rather the assault brings the forces
forward a bit farther and another assault is planned. During the
assault, each unit has a stated objective and often secondary objectives
with precise plans on how to achieve them. That being said, sometimes,
often, in the midst of the assault, the plans tend to go awry and units
have to act in an aggressive, intelligent and pro-active manner to
ensure its success. Most of plans are not designed to take the main
objective, but to prevent the enemy from reacting to the main assault.

Occasionally broad, deceptive stratagems are enacted and are very
successful. But in general the best technique is a slow ground pound
towards the enemy headquarters. This may be more brutal, but it's also
the best way to avoid major defeats. Occasional airmobile raids and
assaults into the enemy backfield are appropriate and can enact major
gains. They also can enact major defeats, so choose wisely. And,
eventually, you take the enemy's headquarters and, nine times out of
ten, they counterattack. The bastards.

In the meantime the defenders are making their plans. They aren't as
fixed as the assault group, because they don't know exactly what the
assault will turn out to be. So, by and large, they put their heavy
forces to the fore with light, fast forces to the rear in case the enemy
stages a breakout. They would like to stop the enemy cold or even
counterattack and push them back. But their main focus is simply to
break up the attack and channel it to ineffectiveness. Occasionally they
base their strategy on a plan of counter-attack during the assault. It's
risky, it risks that their intermediate weight "anti-breakout" units are
tied up in the counter-attack. But when successful it's devastating.

In soccer there is a continuous fluidity. The objective changes from
moment to moment and no one can give clear orders because the situation
changes too rapidly. There are, at best, weak and limited plans with
exception of occasional brilliant coordination by a few minor units. The
best most leaders can do is give general directions and hope for the
best. Although there is a target, it is rarely achieved. There is no
logistical resupply except removing units and replacing them with
sub-par ones. It depends upon the fleet movement of light fast units. If
you kick them in the shins they tend to fall on the ground writhing in
agony.

Football is how Americans fight wars. Soccer is how the French do it.

The 'missing games' also show up if you use the website interface
(https://gaming.amazon.com) instead of the Amazon Games client, so if
you'd prefer to click 'add-to-library' for all the games at once
rather than juggling between two clients, that's the way to do it.

(Personally, I don't mind the two clients thing but Twitch's 'crown'
menu always feels so messy and finicky that I tend to use the website)

The discrepancy is likely because Amazon hasn't added support for
logging into third-party clients (Origin/UPlay/etc.), and without that
they can't access your third-party account to add the non-Amazon games
(Twitch already had that support built-in when Amazon bought the
company). Presumably this is because they want to get people to visit
the website to see adverts, or somethin'.

You can click 'games' at the top and that way you don't have to see
all the micro-transaction games' free bling, which is most of what they have.

A great selection of games this month, I had been on the fence about buying
AC:O after the free weekend, now I don't have to! Shadow of Mordor is good,
I just wasn't into it, and I had that already thanks to your givaway :)

There's a number of games that look interesting on 'Luna' cloud gaming too,
maybe I'll give that a try now.

Hot Wheels Unleashed (wanted to try this)
Everspace (love this game)
Earthworm Jim (been a long time, I assume this is newer? liked the game
I played)

And a bunch of others I'm not familiar with that look interesting.

Oh, looking through the terms of service, it's US only though currently, I know

Luna is free with prime if that wasn't clear, though there are games in it that cost
extra.

I gave a couple a try. No setup or long downloads so it was quick to get in and
try the games, which makes it much easier to jump right in and play.

There was a few hiccups and the screen flashing 'network issue detected'
occasionally. I never find any issues when I do normal network checks. I had the
issue with the nvidia one it wouldn't even let me run the games because
of finding 'network issues.'

Eh, 'blind boxes' for cars, very slow progress, the cars I started with and unlocked
aren't interesting, I don't like racing games where you drift to build nitro, it feels
like a mobile game. Glad I never bought this when I was thinking about it, and
someone here posted it wasn't good.

The next one I played was "Riptide GP Renegade" It's a futuristic jetski racing
and stunt game. You do tricks when jumping on sliding for nitro. At least this one
is a bit different with the jetski physics, I can see playing this a bit. The graphics
are low polygon, while that doesn't bother me, I know it will bother others, so I
mention it.

That is the old one from 1995. I didn't play it though.

It amuses me that everyone in this newsgroup ignores all that free
crap. Even when it shows up in Epic's weekly freebies, nobody ever

I've mixed feelings about "AC:Origins". On the one hand, it was
Ubisoft trying to break away from the 'same-as-all-its-other-games'
problem that have constantly plagued its open-world experiences. On
the other hand, it doubled down on the grind with its vastly oversized
open world, and the annoying leveling mechanics it used to lock off
parts of the map until you gained enough experience.

That sort of thing works when you have a huge variety of monsters
(giant rats for the newbies, orcs for mid-tier PCs, dragons for the
end-game) but I find it annoying when the foes you face off against
remain the same throughout the game /except/ for their level.
/ESPECIALLY/ when the foes are nominally 'ordinary' creatures and
humans. If I sneak behind some dude and stab him in the back, the
effect should be the same regardless if the difference between our
levels is positive or negative.

I find the new method far more immersion-breaking than the franchise's
older "you can't go here because your avatar doesn't have any memory
of doing that" invisible walls.

Trying to get football 'off the ground' in the US has been going on as
long as I can remember although my understanding is that it's had
limited, but some, success*. Saying that, it's more successful than when
it's been tried the other way around with introducing American football
to Europe.

They've even tried playing some games at the UK's national football
stadium. Getting a crowd of 90,000 sounds impressive until you think
that's one game a year and the catchment area is Europe.

*The MLS or as we like to call it the graveyard for footballers who are
well past their prime but want one last paycheck!

I was thinking John Ringo must be really old, because that hasn't
been true in American football in a long time, at least not at the
professional level. The last year the NFL as a league ran on more plays
than passed was 1983. You have to go way back to the league's earliest
days in 30's and 40's for passing to be considered only something teams
did "occasionally".
