I'm probably a bit old to use the word hyped but anyway, something
that's kinda an offshoot of Spalls' where are all the games thread. I
did think about it and it was Bioshock way back in 2007, oh and I was
greatly disappointed. What I am hyped for, the release of the Spitfire
Mk.IXc in 1/24 scale by Airfix. I even pre-ordered it!

The New Monkey Island game!
But besides that, my citrus plants hype me more, and that reliably.

In my case, it's difficult since I don't pay much attention to release
dates anymore (anyway, with so many games - even triple-A titles -
going 'early access', "release dates" have lost a lot of their
meaning). So my eager anticipation of getting my hands on a new title
has taken a hit because - more often than not - I barely know the
games exist until after they come out.

Still, I'm not immune. Most recently I was crouched over Steam waiting
for the clock to tick over until the "Montana" DLC became available
for "American Truck Simulator." I quite enjoy the base game, and who
doesn't want to explore Big Sky Country? Of course, I'd only learned
about the existence of that DLC two or three days earlier, so my
anticipation - though eager - was fairly short-lived.

Really, if you mean the sort of long-term, "when's it coming out, I
gotta have it, this is gonna be so cool, is it out yet, what's taking
so long, I waaaaaannnntttt it" anticipation - that energetic, youthful
(and crassly capitalistic) euphoria... hmmm, I gotta go back a bit.
"Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim", maybe. There's a game I really couldn't
wait to play, and even 'snuck out' mid-day from work to buy it from a
not-so-nearby shoppe. The damn thing even appeared in my dreams.

But nowadays? I've more patience, and less willingness to spend on
games that rarely deliver the sort of value I expect. My interest is
less on new releases, and more on new freebies, and since those
releases are usually unannounced until they suddenly appear, I've no
way to anticipate them, eagerly or otherwise.

(In fact, when I do hear about freebies, more often than not I'm the
opposite of eager - I'm disappointed - because it's usually /after/
I've already broken down and paid for the game they're now giving away
gratis. ;-)

TL;DR: I'm too spoiled by early-access and cheap games (and have too
many unplayed games in the library already) to really worry about
what's coming out next.

I honestly don't know. I honestly and seriously do not know. I thought
about it and can not remember the last game I was excitedly looking
forward to. I don't get hyped anymore for games. I don't follow a
game's progress. I just don't care. I already have enough unplayed
games in my backlog to last me (to borrow from Zag) until I'm dead. So
I see no reason to get excited for new ones.

I suppose if an old game I really liked were being remade, that would
get me interested but that is about it.

I'm playing EDF 5 again, so maybe just because of that:

I was hyped about Earth Defense Force: World Brothers but after it
came out the features it didn't have (splitscreen) and issues with
actually getting online play turned me off and I never bought it. It
does have pretty good reviews and seems to be fine for singleplayer,
so perhaps I'll get it eventually.

I was/am also hyped about EDF 6, it's out, but only in Japanese,
it'll probably be another year before it's out in English. It sounds
like they didn't improve anything from EDF 5 and it's practically
the same game though. I'll be waiting to see what's said once
the English version is out.

I was pretty hyped about Elden Ring too, but with my specs being lower
than required, and it being open world somewhat tamped that down.
I didn't buy it right away, but after hearing you could actually play
it on systems below the requirements bought it, and then found out
while you can play it with my old specs, 'play' is relative.

Ditto. When I was younger, I was crazy about new stuff. Not anymore!

If I lower the bar a bit to looking forward to I can put down
Fallout:London and STALKER 2 but that's a bout it.

I think that part of the problem is that there's just so many games to
choose from and that there aren't many new releases that I think are
doing something different and even if they are then they get lost in a
sea of games. If I compare that to model kits there's a real difference.
Superficial it may seem the same (a plane is a plane isn't it) but the
subject matter really does make a difference to whether you want a kit
or not. The Spitfire in 1/24 will pretty much be the only one in that
scale available as the last one released was in 1970.

Every time I hear about "Resident Evil 4" (remake or otherwise), I
flashback* to the first time I played the game.

I played it on PC, of course, but by the time the port was available,
the game had already made a name for itself. Many considered it the
best of the series, and there was a lot of noise about how it
revitalized the gameplay. I had played RE1 (on PC, natch) and had been
supremely underwhelmed by the game's now infamous lack of polish (not
to mention its atrocious tank-controls) and so had skipped its two
sequels. Still, I couldn't help marveling at the impressive visuals
showcased in RE2 and RE3, and kept wondering if I was missing out. So
a new Resident Evil game, with a better control scheme and extra
polish? I had to give it a try.

I stuck with the game ten minutes.

It was my first introduction to what we now call "quick-time events",
you see, and I hated it at first sight. My initial impressions of the
game were middling to begin with; the controls were undoubtedly
/better/ than RE1, but they still felt sluggish and clumsy compared to
modern FPS/TPS games on PC. The visuals were... well, RE4 was released
in the middle of the "real is brown" period of video-games, plus the
PC port was based on the Gamecube version, so the game wasn't the most
eye pleasing. And the dialogue and setting were... I call it "Japanese
weird", because it was the sort of odd mix of serious and
tongue-in-cheek that only seems to come from games made on that isle.
So while I didn't dislike the game, neither was anything exciting me
either.

And then, that damn QTE. You enter a small ravine and a boulder chases
after you; a typical action-adventure trap. Honestly, I'm not sure
anymore if it was a 'proper' QTE where you can only push one button at
a time, or if it merely locked your camera and limited you to a
selection of controls. Regardless, it stole control from the player -
both in where you could look and what you could do - and felt like
such a betrayal of the game's promise that I abandoned the title right
then and there.

I eventually went back - years later - and worked my way through the
game, just because it remained a 'classic' and I had to see if I was
missing something. But I did so grudgingly and never really enjoyed
the experience; it was - for me - at best a middling game that too
often dipped down into 'awful'. I've never been able to see why the
game garnered so much favor, except maybe because its controls and
camera weren't as awful as in RE1-3.

So there's a remake now and - if the previous remakes are anything to
go with - it will probably be pretty good. But I'm not sure I can make
myself give the game another try. That first QTE cast a long shadow.

I played one of the RE games on PS2. No idea which. The controls
and camera were probably the worst of any game I played on the PS2
and much like you I didn't make it very long into the game. That was
my first and last attempt at an RE game.

Sad, as I rather enjoyed the movies. I haven't watched the new series
as I've heard it's exceptionally bad.

I did also play Silent Hill on the PS2 and rather enjoyed that one. It
didn't have the camera and control issues that RE did. I wouldn't
mind giving RE a second chance, but it would have to be one with
decent camera and controls, if such even exists.

I do find it interesting that 'remakes' have gained so much traction
of late. Even though I wouldn't call most of them remakes, they
slap some different graphics on and call it a 'remake' in most
cases and do little if anything to improve the game, and in the
case of GTA San Andreas from what I've read the game is actually
worse, as are the 'improved graphics'.

You may wish to give the Resident Evil 2 remake a look. It revamps the
controls so it plays like a typical third-person shooter (IIRC, you
can still play it using the old camera angles if you're a
masochis^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^h purist) and the gameplay has been revamped
to be a bit more modern (there's still a lot of the original game's
stupidities, especially when it comes to the story and some of the
puzzles, but that's part of the franchise's 'charm'). It's probably
the best way to experience the game, even if it isn't absolutely true
to the original's 'vision'.

I have to admit I sort of enjoyed the movies myself. I mean, in terms
of pacing, acting, characters, dialogue and story they were horrible,
and they had little to do with the actual games (outside of very broad
strokes) but they were passably fun if you turned off your brain and
just wanted to see people gorily torn apart by zombies

(and who doesn't want that? ;-)

I almost bought it but I watched the trailers on Steam and I can not
put up with those graphics! Very weird.

It's a big release for Airfix as the Spitfire is one of the most iconic
aircraft of WWII and there really aren't many options, two I think, in
this large scale. One is very old (1970's) and the other has quite a few
bits about it that are just wrong and in particular the cockpit which is
a focus at this sort of scale. I'm not what is called a rivet counter
but there are limits.

Will this one be perfect, no and there never are but it should be very
good and hopefully there won't be a need to buy aftermarket* parts.
Admittedly they will a number of modellers who will slate it for being
complete rubbish based on some minor problems it will have. That's just
the way it works.

*If you're only familiar with modelling from your youth then it really
has changed now as you have a whole sub-industry that will sell you
parts to add more detail, build a different variant than supplied,
different markings etc.

Actually in game the graphics are better than in the videos, they are
fitting. I do not mind them anymore.
