Oh, certainly. There are many books that people here like that I don't.
For a long time I avoided this series because of the initial impression
that I got from people discussing it. It wasn't a correct impression.

Heh. I avoided Jordan for years because the LotR crowd here
routinely panned (even hated) it.

When I did pick up _The Eye of the World_, I enjoyed it and
the rest of them immensely (even the Sanderson volumes, albeit
they didn't match the 'voice' of some of the characters, like
Matrim[*]).

I've never been able to finish LotR.

[*] Must have been something about the character, because the
Amazon series really screwed up Mat's character in the
first episode.

Yeah - in my head, you and I have pretty similar tastes, so when
there are differences they tend to jar a little more.

For me, I avoided Vlad Taltos and Miles Vorkosigan for
a long (long!) time because the comments here on rasfw
were so over the top, and often focused on things I didn't
care for, or about. It took a long (long!) time to get
calibrated for a fuller, more accurate picture.

And I'm really glad I ended up reading both.

Heh - I saw them perform one year ago yesterday. They were great.
But (as I suspect you know) I think he's referring to news.individual.net.

I too use GG, partly for your reasons, with a side dish of "I tend
to post from one of three machines - 2 macOS, and 1 Windows",
and I'm just lazy enough to not want to set up all three for the
purpose of posting here.

Using real newsreaders on multiple machines has synchrononization
problems too. If they were all the same OS, you might be able to
install the reader on a flash drive and carry it between machines. I
looked into that with XanaNews and I think I could have. But ultimately
I didn't.
