Has not only a preview of Return To Monkey Island, which I just bought
but can's stand the vector type graphics, but also their Top 100 PC
Games.

Gosh - I didn't count how many of those that I have bought but I don't
need to buy any more games for a long time. Like their #1 Disco
Elysium which I need to get back into along with maybe 20 or more
others! I probably have more than that from their list. Pathetic!

For whatever reason I really have a problem to like Disco Elysium, not
sure why.

The impression I get is it's one of those marmite games. Personally I
think it's great but there's lots out there that just can't see why it
was so critically acclaimed*. Personally it's the best game I've played
in the last few years and it makes it onto my list of all time great games.

Oh and there's a bit of drama now surrounding it with accusations from
both the original creative team (fired at the start of the year) and the
investors.

*It also highlights how often there is a disconnect between what the
average gamer wants out of the games compared to game journalists.
Indeed the problem exists in lots of entertainment industry.

Gamers and critics loved Disco Elysium. The reason was for the game's
excellent writing, no secret there. There is a far greater disconnect
between what critics like and what consumers like in the film industry
from what I have seen.

The game reminds me of some movies everyone is raving about.
I remember there was this local movie, everyone was raving about, when I
saw it I could not see what the fuzz was about. Mediocre acting, pretty
bad jokes for a comedy, probably everyone was raving about because it
was a local production and it was different.

DE is rather similar, I do not really like the character but I can see
that the game is absolutely different and the writing really is solid,
but I cannot get into it because I neither like the main protagonist nor
do I particularily like the setting, but I can see why many people like
it, and theoretically I should like it too, but for whatever reason I
cannot really.

The game itself seems sound and its nice to see dialogue and
characterizations in an RPG that's a bit more than NPCs whose only
goal is to kill you, give you a quest, or have sex with you. It's a
clever deconstruction/reconstruction of RPG tropes and I can
appreciate it for its novely. I don't think this is an issue of
"critics don't understand the general audience" as much as this is
just a niche game that happens to be exceptionally well made. As such,
it is deserving of all its praise (unlike marmite!) but no, it won't
be what everybody wants.

Take me. I think I'd love this game. But I have a really hard time
getting into top-down games these days, and RPGs are just too deep of
a time sink, and so I haven't played it for more than a few hours. I
just can't get into it. In a different format, I'd probably have
finished it twice, but top-down? It's a chore for me to finish those
games.

I never bothered with Disco Elysium, because like Werner, the setting
does not interest me but the main reason is I think it would be too
passive of a gaming experience for me. Too much reading, not enough
playing.

I bought it and tried it, but yeah, pretty much that, not really any combat.
If it was attached to a good combat system it would be great. I got 21 hours
in, so enough to reasonably give it a fair shake.

Oh don't get me wrong, I don't think it's critics don't understand the
general audience but instead critics aren't the general audience.

Yeh, if the setting doesn't interest you then it's going be tricky to
like the game as a lot of it is learning about the setting through text.

For the passive part, I can see that but for me I was very much actively
engaged in my part in the whole story. One aspect that is basically
missing is combat but fortunately for me combat isn't the thing I play
CRPG's for.

Obviously, as always horses for courses and all that.

As an aside it did bring out some of the worse aspects of
reviews/discussions on Steam. One side saying it's a bad game just
because the game was never aimed at them and the other side saying that
if you don't like it then it's because you're thick. I never really
understand why people can't just accept that what people want from games
is highly subjective.

At least I can see that, I don't care for it, but I can see what's so attractive
about it. I don't grudge it's spot as #1 on that list, though I'd still say Fallout
1 and 2 did similar things ages ago, and made the combat fun too, giving the
full package.

It's just a list anyway. Anyone can make up a list.
