I know, I'm probably the only one in this newsgroup who cares about
this game. Still, on the off chance I'm not, the Texas DLC for
American Truck Simulator is now available.

Although don't take this announcement as any sort of excited
recommendation. Having played it for a few hours, I don't think I've
been less impressed with an ATC map since the game's initial release.
So far, it's a lot of uninteresting nothing; the expansion has little
in the way of character or atmosphere. Which - having visited Texas in
real life - is pretty true to the real thing, but that doesn't make it
anymore fun to play in a game.

Hopefully there will be some interesting spots further on, but as it
stands now, I wouldn't expect a glowing recommendation in my
end-of-month review. ;-)

I am going to boot it up with the Montana map tonight or tomorrow.
Can't remember the controls. Always had trouble pulling out of the
lot.

Going to see how much the Texas one is and may buy it but I don't
think the Texas landscape is very exciting from what I have seen.

I've driven across Texas a few times. I remember when coming across a 5
degree turn in the Interstate after an hour of perfectly straight road
thinking that the road construction crew must have thrown a party when
the foreman told them "Today we make a 5 degree turn to the right!"

Also remember making a joke about there used to be stuff in Texas but
the constant wind blew it all northeast past Oklahoma.

Define "starting over".

You could just create a new drive from the initial load screen; all
your progress will be set to 0 (no money, no trucks, no skills, 0% map
explored). You can plunk your 'headquarters' (first garage) somewhere
in Montana if you want. Of course, since you won't own a truck you'll
have to drive random jobs until you can afford a vehicle of your own
that you can use to free roam.

But if you just want to drive around Montana, well... just start
driving? Or if you only want trucking jobs in Montana, select a
Montanan city as a start point and then sort by distance; if it's
under 200 miles, you probably won't cross state lines ;-)

There's no way to reset progress /just/ in the Montana DLC without
doing so for the entire map, however. Still, other than marking what
roads you've explored there's really no point to resetting it anyway.
If you just want to see the Montanan landscape, just drive through it
again (there's a neat 'hidden road' off Rte 90 between Coeur d'Alene
and Missoula; see if you can find it ;-).

Hi Spalls,

I don't care if I lose the progress I made in Nevada. I have no idea
how I ended up there any way.

If I leave the Montana state boundries, then that is okay. Where
would I end up? In the Dakotas or Idaho?

Yeah, I tried to start over and was told that I don't own a truck.
That is probably the reason why I couldn't pick a starting location. I
guess I am just doing random jobs now. That explains things!

I do not remember how to pick a starting point. Guess I will have to
mess around tonight.

Yes, for now, I just want to do routes in Montana. I do have Wyoming
and other DLC maps. Don't care about Texas right now. Nevada is
boring enough! :-)

See, I'm not entirely sure what it is you want to do. After all, if
all you want to do is routes in Montana... you could only accept
routes in Montana.

If you want to start a new driver (which you'll do automatically if it
is the first time you play, or by selecting the 'new profile' from the
profile manager, which you reach from the main launcher screen),
you'll want to select a headquarters in Montana. The maximum length of
your route is determined by your skill, and - until you can afford to
purchase your own truck - that distance will initially be measured
from your headquarters. So if creating a new driver, pick a Montana
city as your HQ (Great Falls is probably best, since it's the most
central of the options) and all your initial jobs will probably be
inside Montanan borders.

As your skillset goes up, the maximum range you can drive increases
(also, as you 'discover' more cities, they count as starting points
for new missions). So it is possible that some missions will start
taking you out of state. However, if you filter the list of jobs -
first by clicking on a city on Montana to limit it to jobs starting in
that city, then sorting by distance - you can easily find all the jobs
that stay within state limits.

If you have an existing driver who has already bought his own trucks,
you can do the same with the freight market (the only difference is
that you'll have to drive to the start point instead of being assigned
a randomly picked company truck). Alternately, just forget about the
jobs and drive around the state in free roam mode.

But as I said, there's no way to 'reset' Montana short of creating a
new driver and 'resetting' the entire map/entire career... and no real
purpose anyway. Hence my confusion as to your end goal. If you want to
stick to just Montana.... just stick to Montana; no reset required.

That's right. I get it now. I think I saw in another post that you
live in Texas DT!

All you rich Texas people do to us here in Montana is to buy up trophy
homes and property and raise our property taxes, among other things!
:-)

If Texas is so great, why don't you all just live there year round?

But I will take Texans over Californians any time! Those whackos move
to Montana to escape California and try to turn Montana into what they
left!!! True story, righ there!!

Nope. I've driven thru Texas a few times on road trips but I don't live
there. The "target practice" comment is based on the fact that Texas is
the only place where I've seen a family oriented restaurant have a sign
outside the front door asking patrons to leave their guns in their cars.

HI Spalls,

I started over from scratch as I was not that far into the game.

But the Map Module is hard-coded to Califrotnia and cannot be changed.

The base game comes with California. (I think Nevada is offered as a
free DLC). If you want Montana, you need to buy that expansion. While
I'd agree with you if you said there's something wrong with calling it
"American Truck Simulator" when it only has 1/50th of the United
States (Bolivia never gets any love!), that's the way it is. To be
fair, the developers make this quite clear on the store page.

But if you have Montana, you can select one of its cities as your HQ
and drive around the state.

I've never been entirely sure how the game works if you have any of
the states between. How do you do a job that starts in Los Angeles and
ends in Grand Rapids without going through Idaho or Wyoming? But
that's because I've slavishly and unquestioningly purchased all the
DLC for the game as it came out, like the good little whale that I am
;-)

(I bought the Texas DLC mainly to avoid this problem in the future.
Certainly it wasn't to visit Texas. I'm not really a fan of Texas, you
may have picked up on that ;-).

Thanks Spalls. I started over. I do have the Montana DLC and others.

Although I could not change the dropdown from California, I was able
to pick Great Falsm MT.

I've been to a few places in Texas but the most visited is Dallas. I
really liked it but then I thought I go to see my brother, I go out with
my brother's friends who were almost exclusively from the UK and the pub
we go to is called the Londoner run by Barry from London!

There are some nice bits of Texas, sure (Austin, for instance) but
they're tiny islands of civilization amongst boorishness and
scrubland. It's idolotry of the oversized, it's supposed
"independence" and its love affair with the automobile are all
grating. It's all the worst aspects of American culture writ large, in
an unappealing and ugly environment. So to all those nice bits in
Texas; yes, I acknowledge your existance, but you're the exception,
not the rule.

IMHO. YMMV. Experiences can differ. Don't take the word of an Internet
boob as gospel; if you really wanna know, go visit Texas and find out
for yourself. Just don't blame me if you don't have a good time ;-)

Well I was trying to be nice about my experience in Texas being from the
UK. So the bits I didn't like with the caveat of some gross
generalisations and it's not all like that. The reliance on cars and
unfeasible large SUV's. We once stayed on the outskirts of Dallas but no
problems there's a light railway about 15mins walk away. The problem is
it's pretty much impossible to walk there unless you want to take your
own life in your hands. Then there was the time we went out in a group
with included some locals. When deciding to move to a different bar we
decided to walk as it was less than ten minutes away. The locals, nope
they were going to drive. The end result we arrived in the bar and
twenty minutes later they turned up after finding somewhere to park. My
favourite though, a friend of my brother's decided that he really had to
stop drink driving as it wasn't a good idea so why not just walk back
(try getting a taxi). He didn't do that for long as he got arrested
three times for being intoxicated on the street.

So moving on the people, that's probably the worse part for me. So you
had the almost constant bragging about how great they were and in
particular money* then the dreaded finding out where you were from and
launching into what could best be described as a rant about how bad the
UK was (based mostly on what someone said on Fox News as far as I could
tell) and how great the US is - yes Mr. Taxi driver I mean you. Finally
how impolite can people be, just from the general lack of saying please
and thank you to when I was queuing at the airport to check-in and I
feel someone tug my elbow. Turning around I have a woman with her
husband and the woman tells me they need to go in front of me as they
are running late. My response, do you now. Well if you had asked nicely
I would have but you didn't ask nicely you demanded so no you can't go
in front of me. Oh and just so know I've got three hours to my flight
but you're still going to be behind me in the queue.

That seems a long enough rant and I didn't even cover guns, stupid
drinking laws, the lack of a sense of humour, come up for a better
design for a shop than a nondescript box or the food where quantity
rules of quality.

Saying all that Austin seemed really nice (even though it seem to have
been transplanted from a different part of the US) and I have been to
some other places, with work, and they've all been nice as well. My
biggest problem is it's a long old way and I don't think it offers
enough that I can't get pretty much on my own doorstop. The other
problem, I've somehow managed to end up on a 'watchlist' which means I
get stopped at immigration and taken to the back room. How bad that is
depends on where you go, so at Washington it was only 20mins whereas
Miami was 2hrs+. Always nice after travelling for fourteen hours or so.

*This I think is a culturally thing as in the UK a lot of people will
look down on people who flaunt their wealth or just brag. As the joke
goes, I'd like to be able to do self-deprecation but I'm just not any
good at it.
