John P. McMeel co-founded the Universal Press Syndicate in 1970.
The syndicate made its bona fides with Doonesbury and Ziggy.
Went on with Cathy and For Better or For Worse.
In the 1980s they distributed Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side to newspapers.
