Doctors explain why former Secretary of State Colin Powell's blood
cancer and Parkinson's disease increased his risk of death from COVID-19

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell died from complications of
COVID-19 on Monday.

The death was a shock considering that Powell had been fully vaccinated
against Covid, his family said in a statement.

However, the 84-year-old, who spent four decades in public service, was
severely immunocompromised, having been treated for multiple myeloma - a
cancer of white blood cells in bone marrow - and suffering from
Parkinson's disease.

Doctors say that despite Powell's breakthrough infection that resulted
in his death, cases such as these are quite rare.

They explained to DailyMail.com why his conditions put him at increased
risk of death and why it doesn't mean that COVID-19 vaccines are
ineffective. ,

COVID-19 deaths among the fully vaccinated are uncommon with just 0.003
percent of 187 million people dying of the virus as of Monday, data from
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show.

But people with cancer have an increased risk of becoming severely ill
and dying from COVID-19, even if they are fully vaccinated.

A spokeswoman said Powell had successfully undergone treatment for
multiple myeloma.

'Among breakthrough infections, the majority of these are among
immunocompromised,' said Dr Ali Mokdad, an epidemiologist with the
University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation
told DailyMail.com.

'[Powell is] one of those people that the vaccine alone cannot produce
immunity for him.'

A CDC report in August found that between 40 and 44 percent of people
hospitalized with breakthrough infections of COVID-19 are
immunocompromised despite making up only three percent of the U.S.
population,

Those with hematologic cancers - related to the bone marrow, immune
system, and other blood-related tissues like Powell had - are at
especially high risk.

Hematologic cancer patients tend to have defective immune systems. In
other words, these patients' bodies aren't able to produce antibodies
and fight off disease in the way that they should be.

Plus, some of the common treatments for these cancers can exacerbate
immune system defects - targeting B cells (which fight viruses) and
other parts of the system.

This prevents the immune system from being able to mount a full response
to vaccination.

One Israeli study from May found that 10 percent of cancer patients who
got two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine did not develop a high
level of antibodies compared to everyone in a group of healthy patients.

And another July study found only 45 patients wih active multiple
myeloma 'developed an adequate response' after getting either the Pfizer
or Moderna vaccines.

'Conditions and medications that compromise the function of B cells
(such as myeloma) that produce antibodies appear to carry special risk
for SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe COVID-19,' said Dr Stuart Ray, a
professor of medicine from Johns Hopkins University told DailyMail.com.

But Powell had another condition that weakened his immune system:
Parkinson's disease, a central nervous system disorder that affects
movement, often including tremors.

Studies have found that the loss of brain neurons in Parkinson's could
be due to an attack by the person's own immune system.

The doctors say that, despite waning efficacy of the vaccines against
infection, they are still highly effective against severe disease and
death.

'The message isn't that someone got the vaccine and died, but that there
are people in the society that need to be protected by us getting the
vaccine,' Mokdad said.

'He got COVID-19 because someone around him was not vaccinated, not
wearing a mask or not paying attention.'

The experts recommend that immunocompromised people get boosters as soon
as possible, as seen with other popular vaccines, to shore up
protection.

'Vaccine dosing that generates high and sustained protective immunity,
similar to the zero, one, and sox month dosing we've used for decades to
provide sustained protection against hepatitis B virus infection, seems
to provide the highest level of protection � particularly for those at
highest risk of SARS-CoV-2 exposure and/or complications of COVID-19.
