Why? Americans know very well that US media often does not tell the truth.

It looks like the Americans' attitude towards credibility of their
media highly depends on whether it's about domestic or foreign affairs.
Domestic situation they can better know firsthand. But when it comes
to news about foreign affairs, especially related to countries that
are seen as adversaries, then, for many, the distrust gives way to
the fetishized "our Free Press is independent, so it must be credible"
setting.

You are certainly right regarding American fetish on their Free Press.
Their fetish is also the results of 1) Americans' ignorance over China
and Chinese and 2) America media writers often appeal to their readers'
emotion.
