| When you hear the phrase "free market," you probably think
| of "a market that is free from regulation" but that's the
| opposite of the phrase's original meaning!
|
| Adam Smith used the term to describe a market that was free
| from "economic rents" - money earned by owning things,
| rather than doing things. Smith recognized that markets
| attract parasites - "rentiers" - who seek to drain wealth
| by "investing" rather than building and doing.
|
| Which meant that, in the absence of muscular state
| intervention, markets would become less and less free -
| more and more dependent on the whims of rentiers who used
| money to breed money by creating toll-barriers between
| parts of the productive economy.
|
| For Smith, markets were only free if they were regulated.
| But that's the opposite of the way that we talk about free
| markets today. Today, a free market is a market where you
| are free to collect rents - passive income from owning
| things, at the expense of people doing things.

No need to read past that illiterate lie.

This fool doesn't understand a thing that Adam Smith wrote.

The 'renters' typically FINANCE the do-ers. As such
they serve a vital function. Business does much better
with investors than without.

There is a sub-group that just seem to make money by
shuffling money around and around, hedge-funds and
such. Their contribution to the do-ers is a little
more indirect.

Nothing to do with your lies about economic rent. Rent is not what you claimed
it to be.

You don't know a fucking thing about economics.

Doctorow is 100% right about Adam Smith. You have no
idea what you're talking about. The term "rent seeking"
comes directly from Adam Smith:
<https://www.investopedia.com/terms/r/rentseeking.asp>
(Read it and be enlightened, Rudy.)

No, he is wrong about Smith's view of economic rent, because Doctorow doesn't
know what it is.

He's 100% wrong about Smith, about rent, and about Smith's view of free markets.

Because, you stupid drooling illiterate fuck, governments aren't "investing" to
put assets to their most productive use. Governments "invest" to manipulate
markets, and to shower goodies like "free" child care on undeserving louts.
It's not "investment," it's simply expenditure of other people's money.

You nailed it. Govt "investment" is just POLITICS, not
actual "business". The aims are quite different. The
former throws cash down the toilet, the latter makes
stuff and money which makes more stuff and more money.

I work for a living, porkchop. I can have anything I want any time I

I also run over vegans with my electric bike for fun thanks to Mike Bonin,
