Saudi Arabia executes 81 men in one day, the biggest mass execution in decades

(Reuters)Saudi Arabia executed 81 men on Saturday, including seven Yemenis and one Syrian, for terrorism and other offenses including holding "deviant beliefs," authorities said, in the biggest mass execution in decades.

The number dwarfed the 67 executions reported in the kingdom in all of 2021 and the 27 in 2020.

"These individuals, totaling 81, were convicted of various crimes including murdering innocent men, women and children," the interior ministry said in a statement.

"Crimes committed by these individuals also include pledging allegiance to foreign terrorist organizations, such as ISIS (Islamic State), al Qaeda and the Houthis," it added.

Some traveled to conflict zones to join "terrorist organizations," the statement said.

The ministry did not say how the executions were carried out.

The men included 37 Saudi nationals who were found guilty in a single case for attempting to assassinate security officers and targeting police stations and convoys, the ministry added.

The kingdom executed 63 people in one day in 1980, a year after militants seized the Grand Mosque in Mecca, according to state media reports.
A total of 47 people, including prominent Shiite Muslim cleric Nimr al-Nimr, were executed in one day in 2016.

Rights groups have accused Saudi Arabia of enforcing restrictive laws on political and religious expression, and criticized it for using the death penalty, including for defendants arrested when they were minors.
Saudi Arabia denies accusations of human rights abuses and says it protects its national security according to its laws.

SPA, Saudi Arabia's state news agency, said the accused were provided with the right to an attorney and were guaranteed their full rights under Saudi law during the judicial process.

I bet if the sword is big enough, sharp enough, and used correctly,
it does not hurt at all.

Having said that, nitrogen asphyxiation is the way to go.
No poison, no drugs, 100 percent effective, no sensation of
not being able to breathe. Put the prisoner in a comfy chair,
restrain them, pipe in calming elevator music, and the crowd
can watch as they fall asleep in less than five minutes.
Even better, they can get their choice of mood lighting
and even scented nitrogen.

And America supports and arms this barbaric absolute monarchy. The Saudi royal family has more autocratic power which George III could not have ever dreamed of. Never let it be said that the USA defends "freedom" around the world. In reality it doesn't give a rats.

I am pretty sure there are 81 capital offenses being committed on a near daily basis in the U.S.

How is that relevant in any way to capital punishment as a judicially-
imposed punishment of the person convicted of a crime that isn't even
defined as a crime in the United States?

The argument being made here is that Our Friends the Saudi royal family
commit significant human rights abuses that the rest of the world should
not be turing a blind eye toward just because they export oil.

What is the rest of the world supposed to do? I am sure Amnesty International might be bleating about it somewhere, otherwise...

Same goes for Saudi Arabia as any other country, don't break the law. DUH.

These were probably thought crimes. How did you peronsally determine
that they broke the law? It's not like Saudi Arabia has due process.
People get arrested on accusations they can't defend against.

Of course you haven't and you won't be able to, so perhaps advising
people not to break the law isn't relevant.

The United States doesn't have crimes against religious orthodoxy.
It's just not "kinda like here". Also, defendants get lawyers at trial.

I think that whoever it is you are engaging with is playing the role of a
Saudi defender. I don't think he actually believes it, but he is playing
that role for the sake of this thread.

But what it all boils down to is: Yes, the US is far from perfect. But it
is lot (a lot!) closer to perfect than is Saudi Arabia. To try to equate
the two is idiotic.

Alway remember Rule #1: It is always the side that sucks that says "Well,
you suck, too". (And/or as it is also often phrased: "Both sides are the
same". Again, the side claiming that both sides are the same is always the
side that sucks the worst - and would, thus, benefit most from having you
believe that both sides are the same)

Normally, the referent of Rule #1 is the GOP - the party that is always
trying to tell us that all politicians are corrupt, so you shouldn't worry
about the fact that they are far more corrupt than the Democrats. But
here (in this thread), the referent of Rule #1 is the Saudis and anyone
trying to defend them.
