The Anchorage Daily News reveals that Don Young,the
United States Representative from Alaska since 1973,
born June 9th 1933,died (on board an airplane)
March 18th 1988.
His reelection fundraisers scheduled next week are
presumably cancelled.

Under current rules,the representative elected in
the special election that must be held in May or June
will get to have Young's office in the Rayburn Building
(considered the most desirable in any House office building
and occupied by past Deans of the House though not all of
them) until the end of this Congress and then (if reelected
in November in the first place) have to go down to what
seniority permits in January.

(He was younger than any current member of the First
Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints,but the oldest member of either house of Congress).

Hal Rogers of Kentucky becomes the new Dean thanks to
alphabetical order over Chris Smith of New Jersey.

Eddie Bernice Johnson of Texas becomes the oldest in the House,
and Senator Dianne Feinstein the oldest in either house;
Johnson is not running for reelection,nor is Grace Napolitano,
a year and a day younger,so Bill Pascrell would likely be
the oldest member of the next House.

Yo Louis--do you offhand know if there's any truth to the story that former Speaker John Boehner told about how the late Alaskan once held a Crocodile Dundee-style knife at the then-Speaker's (and fellow long-serving Republican U.S. Representative!--throat (somewhere inside The Capitol, I gather) ?

Sounds like Boehner (the Cincinnati barkeep's son who famously and unapologetically loves his beer) might have been exaggerating, if not totally imagining the incident--though the late Young DOES seem to have been something of a McCain-style hothead. And anyone herein know if Boehner ever attached a specific date to the alleged incident?

Electoral-vote.com records that Young was admonished that his
seniority-related duty was to swear *in* the Speaker and not
swear *at* the Speaker,FWIW.
