Just a reminder that the FIDE Candidates Tournament will be held in
Toronto March 3 - 23.

I could be wrong but believe this is the first time the Candidates has
been held in North America.

Well yes and no - in 1971 the Candidates was on a match format with
Fischer-Taimanov in Vancouver, BC and Fischer-Larsen in Denver, CO.

Until the present era I >believe< the only times the actual World
Championship match was held in North America (1st half NYC, 2nd half
Montreal) were Lasker-Zukertort 1894 and Lasker-Marshall (1907 -
played in several US cities) while Capa beat Lasker in Havana 1921.

As a member of the Chess Federation of Canada national executive I can
tell you that there was some "excitement" (of a bad sort) with
registrations and e-mails flying here there and everywhere which have
now been resolved and everything is good to go.

What makes this one interesting is that it's the first time the Mens'
and Womens' Candidate events have been held concurrently. The pictures
I've seen suggest they'll be played in the same room concurrently
which shouldn't be an issue since there are 16 players (plus
officials) in each event.

(I recently purchased Keres' book on the 1948 Match-Tournament and am
having a wonderful time on the games - highly recommended though being
a hardcover, a bit pricey)

The first round of the 1988 Candidates were held in St John, while
Spraggett's semi-final match with Yusupov was held in Quebec city.

Byrne's match against Spassky was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

ITYM Steinitz-Zukertort 1886, and Lasker-Steinitz 1894, which was held
in Montreal, NY, and Philadelphia.

The Steinitz-Tchigorin matches of 1889 and 1892 were held in Havana,
while the Steinitz-Gunsberg match of 1890 was held in New York.

I would recommend anything by Keres. Though for a broader selection of
his earlier games (up to 1948) Reinfeld's collection is good. Keres
himself gave it an approving introduction. Though the overlapping games
are much more deeply annotated in Keres own book.

Spraggett-Yusupov was 1989 right?

I've made the claim concerning 1971 being the most recent Canadian
site involving the Candidates and nobody on the CFC executive drew
that one to my attention go figure.

I would have expected some of them would have remembered - doh! (I had
remembered Spraggett went to round 1 of the Candidates but not the
venue or year. Of course that would have been right about the time my
second daughter was born so I may or may not have had an excuse :)
