This leaves Lord Inge as the only surviving substantive Field Marshal
(the Duke of Kent and Prince of Wales hold the rank on an honorary
basis thanks to being royal,and Lord Guthrie of Craigiebank and Lord
Walker of Aldringham as former Chiefs of Defence Staff without the
financial aspect of substantive rank...I do not know if Generals
Richards,Houghton,and Carter [ex CDSes] might eventually be granted
the honorary status but it seems quite definite that the Dukes of York
and Sussex have derailed the possibility of their getting it by the
royal path and the Earl of Wessex appears never to have been considered).
