World's oldest person, Kane Tanaka, dies in Japan aged 119

(CNN)Kane Tanaka, the world's oldest person, has died in Japan aged 119, according to a statement released by the country's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

Tanaka, who was born on January 2, 1903, died on April 19, the ministry said.

Guinness World Records said they were saddened to hear of Tanaka's passing, and said the news of her death had been confirmed by senior gerontology consultant Robert Young, who also helped confirm her record as the oldest person alive back in 2019.

Tweeting about her death, Guinness World Records said: "She became the oldest living person in January 2019 at the age of 116 years and 28 days.

"She is also the second oldest person ever recorded, behind only Jeanne Calment who lived to the age of 122."

Tanaka's family said in a tweet earlier this month that she had been frequently sick recently and "in and out of hospital."

Born in 1903, Tanaka married a rice shop owner at the age of 19, and worked in the family store until she was 103.

She twice survived cancer and lived through a multitude of historical events, surviving two world wars and the 1918 Spanish flu -- as well as the Covid-19 pandemic.

CNN previously reported on Tanaka during her preparation to participate in the Olympic torch relay ahead of the postponed Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.

The plan had been that she would take the flame as it passed through Shime, in her home prefecture of Fukuoka, but ultimately she did not participate, because of concerns about Covid-19.

Tanaka had been living in a nursing home in Fukuoka. Her family said she kept her mind and body engaged by doing math and remaining curious.

Tanaka's great-granddaughter Junko Tanaka set up a Twitter account in January 2020 to celebrate the supercentenarian's life.

She tweeted photos of her great-grandmother enjoying treats such as cake and soda pop, and shared her achievements and the exchanges she had with her relatives.

CNN previously reported Junko as saying of her grandmother: "I might be biased because I'm related to her but I think it's kind of amazing -- I wanted to share that with the world and for people to feel inspired and to feel her joy."

In 2020, one in every 1,565 people in Japan was over 100 years old -- more than 88% of them women. Government figures released in July 2020 showed that women have a life expectancy of 87.45 years compared with 81.4 for men.

Announcing Tanaka's death on its website on Monday, Guinness World Records said "the titles of oldest person living and oldest person living (female) are currently being investigated" and that further details would be announced in due course.

"She is also the second oldest person ever recorded

Well, THAT'S something I didn't know. Good for her.

But I'm still disappointed...I had looked her up recently and I thought: "please let her live just another three years, so she can break the record!"

According to Genarians, the oldest living person is now:

Lucile Randon (a nun in Toulon, France)
02/11/1904
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucile_Randon
(this is kind of impressive)
So she has about 4 years and 3 months to go - if she can.

I'm waiting on Guinness to specifically certify her before I add her to my

My relationship with Robert has been fraught...he has followed a strategy
of supplanting my recordkeeping wherever he can,I have collected the
Guinness Books since before he was born, not sure which of us was
corresponding with them first, but I initiated the tables the Gerontology
Research Group site reproduced before gradually replacing them with his.
He refuses to share documentation with me for largely political reasons
so many people he certifies do not reach my lists.

The skepticism is played up by jealous Russians upset that the Soviet
era exaggerated claims there were discredited, but the French woman's
age is absolutely ironclad in its authentication regardless of those
skeptics.

Many French themselves have expressed scepticism about Jeanne Calment. Her record has stood since 1997 so 120 seems to be a the upper limit and of the extremist rarity. Given the possible #PeakLifeExpectancy may be on us, with declines evident in some countries it may become rarer in the future.

Calment's age was documented so consistently throughout her life that
doubting it is pathetic straw-clutching.

While she was an extreme outlier, the accumulation of validated cases
of 114+,115+,116+ lifespans since her death is making her steadily
less of one.

Population growth (when Kane Tanaka was born the world population
was maybe a quarter of what it is now, when Calment was bor neven less)
means ever more people get a chance to break the records, aside from
the increasing proportions reaching given ages.

Super centenarians, those > 110 are still as a group, outliers, even among centenarians. Calment was born just as sanitation was improving and health standards were improving in what was really low hanging fruit for increasing life expectancy. Calment's record has stood for 25 years and improvements in life expectancy come harder and harder to come by. When Calment died there were just under 6 billion people. Today there are just under 8 billion. One problem with increasing life expectancy for the last few years is that unlike the early improvements which allowed people to stay healthy for longer and from a young age, especially infant mortality, where today's life expectancy is increasing (except in some countries where it has reversed), it has been by keeping people sick for longer, but still alive. Doesn't sound like a recipe for an increasing crowd of > 120 super centenarians . And we may have reached #PeakLifeExpectancy. Just take a look at any street scene with overweight/obese people with walking frames, mobility scooters, wheelchairs and generally unwell If you look at that crowd not as a human observer but as a lion stalking prey you would be spoilt for choice. We are an unhealthy herd kept functioning by cups full of pills each day. There is a whole rant on big pharma and the food industry fattening up people like feed lot animals for profit but which I will withhold.

When Calment was alive turning 115 would get you into the all-time top 10.
Fusa Tatsumi, who replaced Kane Tanaka as Japan's oldest person, turned 115
the day Tanaka's death was announced and isn't even in the top 50.
So since Calment's death the apparent (of course there are problems with
statistical significance) odds of getting from 115 to 122 have crashed,
but the chance of getting to 115 has boomed.
114 is the new 112,etc...and the tide is rising.

These days big pharma is pushing "trans rights",since a lifetime of
medicalization for someone trying to pass for the opposite sex can
bring in over a million dollars for the vendors.

I am suggesting we can expect a reversing of increasing life expectancy based on increasing levels of metabolic disease today, T2 diabetes, non alcoholic fatty liver disease, inflammation. Compare footage of 1950s public street of skinnier more mobile people to footage of a public street today of an army of walking frames and obese people. We look like one very sick herd today. Those middle aged people in the 1950s are today's centenarians and super centenarians. Life expectancy has increased since the 1950 but, especially since the 1980s, only by keeping people sick for longer and not by keeping people healthy for longer. Lower quality final thirds of our life spans.. Even before covid life expectancy had been decreasing in some countries and that may well become global. How many super centenarians will come from today's sick herd of middle aged people in decades ahead.

And I was astonished, when I checked Wikipedia, to find that there are
apparently 23 living women who are older than the oldest man.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_oldest_living_people

The man is Juan Vicente Perez Mora (born in 1909) of Venezuela.
Genarians should really list him as well - it's grossly unfair that they don't!

What are the chances that ANY man is ever going to be the world's oldest person?

I remember reading a couple of decades back about some 18th Century European guy who is supposed to have lived 200+ years? It was supposedly more than pure legend a la Noah or Methusalah, with several interested physicians of the time tracked him (and, of course, may have been in on some sort of collective hoax). Anyone got a name or nationality for him?

Thanks!
