Hi
I have in one excel cell (lets say in one box) Account#, Full Name, and Address
like the following

[ 12345 Mary Smith 100 Main Street ]

I want to separate Acctount #, Name, and Address into 3 cells (boxes)
like the following

[12345] [Mary Smith] [100 Main Street]

So I want to write this question:
++++
Q) Sperate Account#, Name and Address into 3 columns.
++++

Is the above question ok? How you would write it yourself
Thank you very much.

The wording is fine apart from the typo, but I'm surprised that anyone
thinks that this can be reliably done. OK, you can pull out a leading
all-digit field, but what about the rest? In this pair of records

12345 George Herbert North Cowper Street
54321 George Herbert North Cowper Street

how do you know which one is for Mr North in Cowper Street and which one
is for Mr Herbert in North Cowper Street?

Thank you for your help and reply. I will correct the type.
About your question, I did not think about that, I do not think
I know how to do that. I will do my research. It is very interesting
Thank you again.

Wrong tool for the job. Excel was not designed for such tasks.
Use something like awk to separate the fields with commas and
save in a CSV file. Also consider importing not into Excel but a
database program (eg mysql). Excel makes a very poor database tool.

Excel contains a set of common string functions that might
help here, and, if these are not enough, VBA, a full-fledged
programming language. (It would also be possible to access
the spreadsheet from other languages such as Python.)

However, the rules to be used for splitting must come from
the client, maybe one can assume that the address part always
starts with a numeral.

Oh yes, it's *possible*. Of course it is.

It's *possible* to walk from Land's End to Duncansby Head, but
you simply wouldn't do it[1], because that would be stupid.

UserMe's question is impossible using any means at all, let alone
one left over from Supercalc, because of the reasons given by Peter
Moylen above.

But why would anyone have typed those three things in a single cell?

Didn't you cover the use of columns in your very first lesson?

You don't seem to understand what she's trying to accomplish. It's a
valid exercise to teach students how to use a particular function of
Excel to extract parts of an entry and place them in columns for sort
possibilities not anticipated when the original entry was made.

Consider an example that is simpler, but very likely to come up.

An original list might have listed addresses as being in Jersey City
NJ 07030 in one column because all of the entries in the list had New
Jersey addresses.

Over time, the list (say, a list of customers) may have expanded to
include addresses in other states. The ability to utilize the
function to place the city in one column and create a state column in
order to sort the list by state would then be possible.

An exercise to teach how a function can be used doesn't consider what
should have been done in the first place; it considers what can be
done to provide a new way to use the data.

Teaching people how to use Excel to create spreadsheets should cover
how to enter the data in the first place, but also how to revise the
distribution by column if unanticipated needs come up later.

This particular exercise deals with the revision aspect.

It's not supposed to be a database, but in the real world a lot of
people do [mis/ab]use it as one because it's easy to get started
with. I think he & I were making the same point (although I was doing
it facetiously).

A program - Excel or any other of that type - is not a database. Excel
and other programs are used to contain the database that is entered.
Whether or not Excel is effective in ways to use that database depends
on what the user wants to do with that database.

Leave it to you to hire an incompetent programmer. Or, more likely,
to invent an absurdity all by yourself. Someone as obsessed with
Jersey City as you are might be expected to know that Jersey City
includes seven inhabited ZIP codes (and a few others), not including
07030.

https://www.zip-codes.com/city/nj-jersey-city.asp

They might even understand that "Jersey City NJ 07030" would be
essentially useless for "all of the entries in the list [with] New Jersey
addresses." New Jersey contains 564 municipalities, which suggests
it includes around 600 ZIP codes.

No one would have been stupid enough to do it the way you did it.

Again, see PM's example.

The first version of Office I had -- which came with a pre-owned PC --
included Access (and a couple of things I had no use for). I tried
to learn to use it to make a relational database for a bibliography /
library catalog like the superb one, Papyrus, I had had on the Mac
(whose developer, however, refused to make a Windows version --
or to upgrade it to run on OS X). I did not succeed.

Later "home" versions of Office did not include Access.

You don't hire a programmer to create a spreadsheet. That's like
hiring an automotive engineer to check your oil. The programmer
created the vehicle that anyone can use enter the data in. The data
entry person decides how the data is entered.

Leave it to you to focus on the wrong end of the stick. It's not the
ZIP code that is part of the address that needs to be split, it's the
state in my example. However, in some instances, the company may want
to be able to sort by ZIP code so that needs to be broken out for
those users.

Oh, Peter, stick to subjects you understand.

What I described is exactly why the function was added, and the need
to utilize that function is quite common because the initial format
does not provide the current need to rank, sort, or identify a
particular aspect.

If no one was stupid enough to enter the data in a format that later
turns out to be insufficient for the needs, then there would be no
need for the function.

I've worked with spreadsheets since first acquiring SuperCalc, and
progressed through Lotus 1-2-3 to other programs as they've been
introduced. I know from experience that the initial formatting may
not be what's needed later. What userme is teaching is a means of
updating a format. Without that ability, the entire data must be
re-entered in a new format.

I use New Jersey in examples so you will have at least one
recognizable term. Anything outside your arc of personal observation
seems to confuse you.

Further example: at various times during my working life I have had to
import data into a spreadsheet, where the source was a document that was
not a spreadsheet. That wasn't a matter of bad planning; it was simply
that the source document was written without spreadsheets in mind.

I don't think any built-in Excel function could have helped me in such
cases. I always ended up having to do manual re-tweaking after entering
the data.

But of course that was about what I needed at the time. I wasn't trying
to teach anyone else. Had I been teaching Excel I would have invented
examples more appropriate to the topic I was trying to teach.
