Chicago is a nice enough place I suppose. I got out when I was
one year old.

Are you trying to help, or something?

I do not speak for CanE, IRIE (whatever that is), or any other variety.

I spent a week or two in Chicago on a course. I stayed at the Palmer
House, which had a rather nice pub at ground level. It was OK, but I
soon learned to go out the front door, as the back door led to a rather
seedy area.

More recently, I travelled to Windsor, Ontario, via the US, and stayed
in a hotel one night. The hotel was OK, but finding my way to it, then
back to the highway was incredible stressful. If I ever travel to
Windsor that way again, I'll be staying at a motel or hotel in a smaller
town.

Wabash Avenue

The (former) major department stores are on that side of State Street;
the west side of State Street, on the other hand, had establishments
that some might consider "seedy.,"

Some of the finest retail stores in Chicago were on those blocks of
Wabash Avenue, including Kroch's & Brentano's, Rose Records, and
a number of jewelry stores.

The only thing that might be considered "seedy" about Wabash Avenue
at that latitude is that the "L" runs on tracks above it.
