That is something I find extraordinary. How can the Russians be so bad

A Russian military affairs magazine just published an article on the
Soviet-Finnish War in 1939/40. The parallels with the current war were
never mentioned, but were obvious for anyone to see.

According to rumour, some part of Russia's military budget was diverted
to buy luxury yachts for the elite. More broadly, corruption at the top
can damage the entire country. (As we're now discovering in Australia.)

It's also possible that both Russia, along with North Korea and the USA
and others, has fallen into a subtle trap: a focus on nuclear weapons
and long-range missiles can reduce the military's capability to run a
conventional "on the ground" war.

The Russian attack also seems to be too dependent on inexperienced
conscripts whose morale is poor.

Those superior Russians forces were a cold war myth.
The Cold War is best seen as an economic war:
trying to topple the Sovjet regime by forcing them
to spend all they could afford on defense.
Poverty would them force an uprising against the communist regime.
It was naive Marxism at its worst. (Dulles' rollback theory)

Of course this meant that 'The West'
had to spend very much on defense.
Those incredibly dangerous Russian forces were needed
to get those large 'defence' budgets accepted.

The Cold War ended, by Soviet colapse from internal inefficiencies,
but the myth of the invincible Russian armies lingered on.
Somehow those armies were supposed to be free
from the general rigidity and inefficiency
that characterised the rest of Russia,
