Hi
I have a table which has 2 columns, Items and Amount Sold. Like the following:

Item -- Amount Sold
TV -- 100
Washer -- 200
Dryer -- 300
TV -- 500
Computer -- 800
Dryer -- 450

I want to write question to find out how much TV was sold
++++
Q) What is the amount sold by TV
++++
Is that good question? How you would write it yourself. Thank you so much.

Let me think about it and then hazard a guess.

This has to be students in rag-week having a challenge to fulfil?

You need to clarify if you are referring to units or currency. (I
want to say "units or dollars", but "dollars" may not be the
currency.)

"How much" would be taken to mean an amount in the currency involved.
"How many" would be taken to mean units.
"Amount' might be taken to mean an amount in currency.

The question, then, should be "How many TVs were sold?"

Your heading should be "Units Sold".

Thank you very much for your help and reply. I see your point now and thank you
for that. I want to say how much ($$$) amount sold for TV?
How this question sounds?
++++
What is the revenue of TV?
++++
Thank you again.

Depends. "Revenue" has a meaning that is not just the total amount of
sales. I would't use it.

A "Total $ Sales" heading would make it clear for the second column.

The question would then be "What is the total amount of sales of
TVs?", but I don't see how this is a useful exercise. You are just
asking the student to read from a list.

They aren't learning anything about Excel.

That is great help. Thank you. I will do this
1) What is the total amount of sales of TVs?
2) How many TVs were sold? ( I was not thinking of this but thanks
for your help and I found it very good exercise as well)

All these questions to help users to use Power Query tool which is
part of the new Excel to do these calculation without writing Excel
Formulas. Thank you again for all your help. I appreicate it.

If you mean the amount of money that one TV is sold for, the best word
is "price".

I want to write A question to find out how MANY TVS WERE sold.

How many TVs were sold?

Other responders think you are asking about the money received from
selling TVs, but nothing in your materials suggests that that is your question.

Use "number" rather than "amount". Amount is for mass nouns, and number
is for count nouns.

For the same reason, say "how many TVs", not "how much TV".

It's true that many English speakers fail to respect that distinction,
but when writing teaching materials you have to focus on clarity, and
avoid copying sloppy errors.

While your comment does agree with what I thought when I read her
post, we found out later she did mean "amount". She meant the amount
of dollars as a result of sales of TVs.

The problem was partially causec by the figure she used. 100 is a
conceivable number of TVs sold, but not a conceivable amount of
dollars realized from the sale of TVs.

I saw that earlier comment, but I thought it was a misinterpretation
because it was so inconsistent with the original formulation.

One way to make it clearer would be to create a spreadsheet with _four_
columns: Item, total sold, price per unit ($), total receipts ($). Then
it's easier to say whether you're talking about column 2 or column 4.

If she meant that she should have written "dollar value" or something
equivalent. Just putting "amount" makes Peter's comment valid.

I know of at least one such place that also has signs saying "These
doors are alarmed".

A classic, well it was to me, sketch has a chap encountering doors with labels;
it's silent comedy (or maybe just sound effects); interspersed throughout a light
entertainment program (may there's some songs & dances as well?):

This guy in recognisable clothes (white coat?) gets to a door labelled "Push",
he messes about 'til we get what's going on, maybe squints, puts on glasses? then
has the lightbulb moment, successfully opens the door & exits.

Other interspersed sketches happen then to another skit with this guy, he
struggles with "Pull".

Now the audience are all prepped for the 3rd sketch where he comes to
a lift and attempts to pull up the bottom of the doors.
Big laugh.

program moves on.

At the end of the program he's seen at the races and spots the reporter's
section labelled "Press", he does so and the whole stand collapses. Huge laugh.

I'm reminded that in a book he wrote years ago, Alan Abel reported
that he had a sign on the door to his apartment saying something like

"Warning! This door protected by an atomic bomb."

The apartment never got broken into.

I know almost no words in Portuguese, but I remember being in Brazil,
and seeing doors with signs saying "Puxe" (pronounced PUSH-uh).
"Puxe" means "pull."

That's overdoing it. A hand grenade would work just as well.
(and would no doubt be more credible)

If two or three teenagers walked past that door, I'm sure that one of
them would have been talked into having a go.

I may have mentioned this before:

The fire station in Nuuk at one point in time had a sign outside
saying "Don't worry about parking here; in case of fire, our 42 ton
