Field Marshal Peter Anthony Inge,a life peer as Baron Inge,
born August 5th 1935,died July 20th 2022 according to The Times
of London.
He was the last surviving British Army officer to have reached
the rank of Field Marshal by functional rather than honorary means
(and thus the last to have collected its full salary for life);
in the 1990s five-star promotions,generally given to those
completing service as heads of service branches or being appointed
as Chief of the Defence Staff,were discontinued,and the only living
nominal FMs are royalty (Prince of Wales,Duke of Kent) or former
CDSes granted HONORARY Field-Marshalship whereby they wear the
uniform but remain on four-star pensions.
Lord Inge was made a life peer on stepping down as CDS (still
fairly standard) and later made a Knight of the Garter and a
Privy Counsellor (less common).
He was Chief of the General Staff (head of the Army) 1992-4
and CDS 1994-7,being advanced to the latter post when Marshal
of the RAF Sir Peter Harding stepped down in a scandal over his
affair with the wife of Sir Anthony Buck MP.
Harding's RAF predecessor Lord Craig of Radley survives as a
substantive five-star RAF officer,while Sir Benjamin Bathurst
is the last surviving substantive Admiral of the Fleet.
