The Megamillions jackpot for tomorrow (July 29)
has been boosted to $1100 million annuity/$684.6 million lump,
pretax...so lots of people are buying tickets in the hope
that they will get it,and all or almost all of them will not.

A draw day boost makes the numbers $1280 million annuity
(31 payments over 30 years that grow from ~$19M-$79M,
per Usamega.com NY's aftertax net would grow about $10M-$40M)
and $747.2M pretax lump(some states' taxes knock that under
$400M and feds alone knock it down to $470M).

The bigger the numbers the more demand and more inevitable
disappointment.

If it rolls tonight (odds are against this with sales this high)
it would break the all-time record, which means I would buy a
ticket for the first time in years (and then never again until
that record breaks).

I never buy lottery tickets. I would if I had a time machine and could
cheat.

Illinois is reporting a winner but not yet verified if that's the only
winner.
My buying one chance at the prospective $1700 million for Tuesday would
not be in the expectation of winning, only to be part of history.

And so it proved out...$1337M final annuity value,
lump value $780.5M which would be knocked down to $453.1M
by USA/Illinois taxes.

I don't either - as many have pointed out, it just warps your attitude toward your ability to succeed on your own.

Not to mention the depression you feel every time you lose.

But sometimes I dream of winning a "small" lottery - say, 4 million after taxes. Especially if I could stay anonymous.

Fran Lebowitz admitted to playing the lottery - but she also said "I figure you have as much of a chance of winning whether you play or not."

Since I buy only when an all-time jackpot record is broken,
I treat each ticket bought as inoculating me against ever
buying for a jackpot that small again.
