The U.K.’s decision not to recognize Covid-19 vaccines administered in vast swathes of the world is sending all the wrong messages about the end game of the pandemic.

The policy, quietly unveiled as part of an easing of travel restrictions this month, means that many visitors will be classified as unvaccinated even if they are double dosed with Pfizer or AstraZeneca shots—the two most prominently used in the U.K.

If a traveler who received shots in the U.S. or Israel arrives in London at the same time as someone with the same doses from India or Kenya, one will be free to enter and the other will be subject to 10 days of quarantine and an extortionate testing regime.

The decision has been branded discriminatory and even racist, yet there has been little explanation of why it has been implemented. A government spokesperson said the move is part of a “phased approach” to the inbound vaccinated, while the U.K.’s High Commissioner in Kenya, Jane Marriott, said it was a question of how to acknowledge vaccine certificates.

If that were the case, how was it decided that proof of dose in Japan, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia is more trustworthy than one in Russia, Thailand or Egypt? There has been no answer to this question.
