A large re enforced concrete bunker built into the slab would've saved a lot of lives.

I read about the construction method used to build the warehouses, basically building the walls flat on the ground and lifting them up into position, and I would not trust any above ground area to be safe from a tornado strike in this kind of building.

While an interior closet is suggested shelter during a tornado, this is really a last ditch attempt at seeking safety when nothing else is available. Nothing beats an underground bunker.
