Lord Sudeley, the 7th Baron, who has died aged 83, was a peer for 81 years.

He was Lay Patron of the Prayer Book Society, President of the right-wing Monday Club, and a Vice-Chancellor of the Monarchist League. His death leaves only two peers who have held their titles for over 80 years, Viscount Gormanston, and His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent.

Merlin Charles Sainthill Hanbury-Tracy was born 17 June, 1939, son of Capt [Michael] David Charles Hanbury-Tracy [born 29 March, 1909, died 22 Aug, 1940, from wounds received at Dunkirk], and his wife the former Colline Amabel St Hill, scion of the Sainthill landed gentry family, widow of Lt-Col Frank King, DSO, OBE, and only daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Collis George Herbert St Hill, of the Royal Devon Yeomanry.

Merlin Hanbury-Tracy succeeded to the peerage, created in 1838, on the death of a cousin, the 6th Baron, who died at sea on active service, 26 August, 1941.

He married 18 January, 1980 [divorced 1988], as her second husband, the Hon Elizabeth Mairi Keppel [1941-2014], scion of the Earls of Albemarle, former wife of Alastair Michael Hyde Villiers [1939-2005], scion of the Earls of Clarendon, and daughter of Derek William Charles Keppel, styled Viscount Bury [1911-68], and his wife the former Lady Mairi Elizabeth Vane-Tempest-Stewart [1921-2009], daughter of the 7th Marquess of Londonderry [1878-1949].

Lord Sudeley leaves no issue, and is succeeded by a great-great-great-grandson of the 2nd Baron Sudeley and a third cousin once removed, Nicholas Edward John Hanbury-Tracy [born 13 January, 1959].
