Raise your hands if you've heard of Allibone. Now, show of hands
for...

2003 - Edward Teller, physicist (Manhattan Project), dies at 95 (yes,
they died on the same day)

I assume your point is "Why mention Allibone, who nobody has ever heard of,
and not mention Teller, who is much better known?"

Have I got that right?

FWIW, have you ever checked out the site, from whence these lists (daily
automated postings) come? It turns out that the newsgroup postings are a
(seemingly arbitrary) subset of the master list on the site. Maybe that
explains the issue above.

I can resist name-dropping for the most part, but if someone brings up
Edward Teller I am physically incapable of restraining myself from
mentioning that I met and chatted with him for about ten minutes at
the Los Alamos Café. Very nice guy, and when he asked me what I did
in the Navy and I told him, he immediately mentioned the particular
nuclear depth bomb we carried and said he knew most of that design
team. I asked if he knew a particular individual -- from whom I was
renting a townhouse for the term of my lab fellowship -- and he did.
So that was a cool afternoon.

Next up you'll tell us how you were ordered to chase down
and destroy the Seaview before it launched its missiles at

Well, if we're going to treat Walter Pidgeon's gals
like, well, Bond Girls, I'll cast my vote
for Anne Francis...
