Angela Lansbury, a formidable actress who captivated Hollywood in her youth, became a Broadway musical sensation in middle age and then drew millions of fans as a widowed mystery writer in the long-running television series “Murder, She Wrote,” died on Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 96.

I briefly dated a woman once who, when much younger, had worked as a
waitress at one of the better-known Broadway restaurants. In came
Angela Lansbury and her friends. Waitress takes the orders. Mr.
Lansbury wanted coffee.

"How would you like it?" asks my friend. Ms. Lansbury gave her one of
those looks and said, "I like my coffee like I like my men."

This confused my friend. "We don't have any gay coffee."

Loud laughter, including from Ms. Lansbury, or so I was told. The
waitress was that kind of Bambi-innocent person you really couldn't get
mad at. I didn't, even when she dumped me.

She's been playing elderly women for my entire life. Really strange.

That story is usually associated with Sylvia Miles, not Lansbury.
(And it makes more sense being associated with the flamboyant Ms. Miles than the more straitlaced Ms. Lansbury.)

homosexual nonetheless.And the Wikipedes cite her as a "gay icon"
thanks to idolization of her character in "Mame" by the
