Sources on the Marx Brothers Council Facebook page are reporting that Richard J. Anobile died yesterday, just days after his 76th birthday.

He's best known as co-author (with Groucho Marx) of "The Marx Brothers Scrapbook," one of the most remarkable movie books of all time, consisting mostly of Richard's amazingly frank (and profanity-laden) interviews with Groucho. Groucho sued to prevent its publication, not realizing that the interviews would be published unedited.

His other best-known books of the 1970s were frame-blowup books - books that paid tribute to the Marxes and other classic comedians by printing blown-up still frames from 16mm prints of their movies alongside transcribed dialogue. In the days before home video, these books did enormous good in popularizing these comedians for a new generation and allowing their work to reach a new audience of film buffs. He also did frame-blowup books for classic movies like Casablanca and Frankenstein.

In the late 70s and into the 80s he wrote authorized "photonovel" adaptations of new movies, such as the first two Star Trek movies, and authorized paperback novelizations. He went on to have a long career in television production.

In the era before home video, his books were a great thing to have. One book, "The Marx Brothers Scrapbook," is still a worthwhile item, as it's an interview book with some great illustrations. The others are pretty useless today. I've still got the Laurel & Hardy book, but only because I'm a Laurel & Hardy nut.
