Len Birman, who has died aged 90, was a Canadian character actor, born in Montreal, Quebec, the son of millinery designer Maurice Lieb Birman and his wife Anna.

Best known for his roles as Harry Herman, the father in Lies My Father Told Me (1975), and FBI Chief Donaldson in Silver Streak. On stage from 1955 to 1995, his roles including Macbeth, Brutus in Julius Caesar, Thomas Cromwell in Anne of the Thousand Days and Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar named Desire.

Also an accomplished multi-medium artist who loved working in everything from watercolor and oil to clay and bronze.

I knew him as Captain America's "boss" (similar to the Oscar Goldman character on "The Six Million Dollar Man" and "The Bionic Woman") in the 1979 CBS TV movies "Captain America" and "Captain America II: Death Too Soon" starring Reb Brown.

He did lots of earnest, furrowed-brow roles like that, probably whenever Anthony Zerbe was unavailable.
