Philip Ziegler, the historian and biographer, who has died aged 93, chronicled with a silken narrative touch the wayward life of King Edward VIII, the only king to have abdicated the British throne of his own volition when in 1936 he renounced the crown for his twice-divorced American mistress, Mrs Wallis Simpson.
