First paragraphs:

In 2021, the U.S. had one of the worst rates of maternal mortality in the country's history, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report found that 1,205 people died of maternal causes in the U.S. in 2021. That represents a 40% increase from the previous year.

These are deaths that take place during pregnancy or within 42 days following delivery, according to the World Health Organization.

The U.S. rate for 2021 was 32.9 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, which is more than ten times the estimated rates of some other high income countries, including Australia, Austria, Israel, Japan and Spain which all hovered between 2 and 3 deaths per 100,000 in 2020...

True.

But it seems to me that it's especially important to prevent newborns from losing their mothers.

Also, I failed to mention that IF the rate went down in 2022, I'll be somewhat surprised if it doesn't go up again - this summer.

Hint: Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.

More specifically, one would expect even conservatives to agree with that one.

Btw, from somewhere on TikTok:

"Why does a fetus have more rights than a woman? Because it still has a chance of becoming a man!"

What are you talking about? 2021 access to medical treatment was not nearly as bad 2020.
Medical treatment for many patients WAS CUT OFF IN 2020 , with hospitals waiting for covid patients that never arrived.
It was very bad in 2020, if not much worse than 2021. I had direct experience with this in April of 2020.

Now, **IF** there is validity in the theory, we should have expected a rise in maternal mortality in 2020. But 2020 mortality was normal.

It is also possible that the denial of treatment in 2020 did not affect maternal mortality until the births crossed over in 2021.
But again, the lack of treatment began in April 2020. Still time for many births to occur in 2020. But 2020 mortality was normal.

As for 2021, access to medical treatment improved significantly over 2020. But 2021 maternal mortality skyrocketed relative to 2020.

Why? Thanks to the outrageous response to COVID shutting down most
access to elective (scheduled) surgery and ongoing medical appointments
for chronic and emerging conditions, parents of young children died or
had far worse outcomes than if they'd been treated in a timely manner.

Why is it less important that the parents of a five year old died who
wouldn't have died otherwise?

>Also, I failed to mention that IF the rate went down in 2022, I'll be

That cannot be blamed on Dobbs either. It can be blamed on BOTH the
medical profession AND politicians calling routing treatment "abortions"
that isn't abortion and thus denying the woman routine care. It's quite
similar to the COVID response. It's all fear driven with no concern for
healthy outcomes.

I don't know why you are picking and choosing. The underlying issue is
the bad outcome may have been avoidable if not for the denial or lack of
routing medical care. The patients and their affected families are
certainly not going to agree with you that the circumstances in which
they found themselves in that led to the bad outcome are different than
the circumstances you describe and somehow it's not as bad a scenario,
even though the patient was left an invalid or died and the family lost
a caregiver.

Conservatives? Uh, no. It's a third party interfering with a stranger's
medical treatment to impose religious views in an un-American manner.

I wasn't aware that CONSERVATIVES believe the Free Exercise Clause
allows them to impose their own religious views on third parties through
legislation.

It's not a liberal versus conservative thing. Either you believe that
because you have very strong and intolerant religious views you get to
impose them on other people, or you don't.

That's not an argument that medical care had reverted to what it had
been in 2019, just that it wasn't as bad as 2020. It's going to be years
before things get back to normal. One very serious problem is that with
the COVID deaths of doctors and nurses, medicine became an undesireable
profession for some AND medical schools were shut down for a time. The
shortage of doctors and nurses will be felt throughout the economy for a
number of years to come.

Given that the gestation period is nine months, one would think that's
the case.

You don't think patients who had been frightened to death by COVID had
not recovered from those fears in 2021 and were failing to seek routing
care? Of course it's still an adverse consequence of COVID.

Oops. I phrased that poorly. It's not a progressive versus conservative
thing. A classical liberal would never seek to impose his will taking
away from an adult the right to make a decision through legislation
regardless of whether there's an underlying religious or nonreligious
motive. Progressives sure as hell seek legislation to impose outcomes as
religious types do. Two sides of the same coin as it were.

There were millions in mid-pregnancy when medical access was severely restricted in April.
One would expect a maternal mortality spike in 2020.

It appears that lack of access to medical treatment was one of the factors for the spike in maternal mortality.
Possibly the major factor.

Other contributing factors might include the consequences of lockdown:
Lack of exercise, poor diet, obesity, anxiety, drug abuse, domestic violence, etc., all of which increase the risk factors.

Maternal Risk Factors

High Blood Pressure.
Mental Health: Depression and Anxiety.
Diabetes.
Maternal Age.
Pre-pregnancy Weight (Obesity)
Infections.
Substance Use and Substance Use Disorders.
Intimate Partner Violence.

.. . . as a consequence of COVID. That's my position. You argued against
it. I'm not reading any more.
