"Newhart"'s series finale was the greatest sitcom series finale I've ever
seen, and according to Bob, she came up with the idea for it years
earlier, at a party Suzanne Pleshette was also attending. He loved the
idea and ran it by Pleshette, and she said she was in. I don't know
whether Bob ever told Ginnie that she really ought to wear more sweaters,
though.

Never knew this fact: not only did the Newharts meet on a blind date set up by Buddy Hackett, but soon enough Bob Newhart became the son-in-law of ubiquitous character actor Bill Quinn!

While the wildly-celebrated finale of Newhart's "Newhart" sitcom delighted much of the country, I didn't even bother to watch it when originally aired.. That's because I never much cottoned to this successor sitcom to "The Bob Newhart Show"; the Darrell & Darrell schtick was tiresome to me after its first rollout, and I didn't either much like the character played by eventual Pleshette-husband Tom Poston. (Didn't care a whole lot for Poston as Bob's prankster college chum The Peeper on TBNS, either.*)

But yeah, the dream scheme WAS an inventive way for the series to go out, and the late Mrs. Newhart should be well remembered for it (and hooray to the late Pleshette for agreeing to it).

Still, my bottom line on "TBNS"-vs.-"Newhart" esthetic debate was provided by one of best television critics ever, the late Robert MacKenzie** [though known to SF Bay Area local TV news viewers as Bob MacKenzie, star reporter and sometime video essayist for KTVU/Channel 2 in Oakland]. When he reviewed "Newhart" in his role as resident critic for TV Guide, MacKenzie's lede was a classic example of damning with faint praise:

If you loved the old "Bob Newhart Show", you'll like "Newhart".

For some reason, I've got it in my head that Bill Quinn was related to
Don Quinn (Fibber McGee and Molly), but he's not.

Larry, Darrell, and Darrell were funny in the first two seasons, when they
were a delightful surprise. Once they became regulars, and you knew they
were going to come in at some point and do their stock routine, they were
no longer funny. In contrast, the writers of Star Trek: The Next
Generation wisely limited Q to one episode per season (except for the
first season, when there were two). Ditto with The Simpsons and Sideshow
Bob.

Another random thing I remember about "Newhart" was when they were
creating it, one of the writers or producers suggested that Dick and
Joanna ought to have kids. "That would be funny," Newhart replied. "Who
are you going to get to play Dick?"
