I'm with you on instinct and (some of the) logic, but the old-school
grammarians (with whom I am generally aligned) would say there is an
implied "am" at the end of the phrase, and "older than I" is proper
because it stands in for "older than I am."

My position is that both are correct and my personal preference is
that the object-of-a-preposition takes precedence over an "implied"
anything. So I agree with you, but I'm not sure we are definitively
"correct."

Btw, many years ago, I got John's autograph.

I also asked him if he were still studying biology and Irish poetry.

His eyes widened and he said no, he just knows a lot about those subjects.

I also asked him why he felt Deborah Spungen blamed him for Sid's downfall in her book "And I Don't Want to Live This Life." (I couldn't find any implication like that.)
