New York Sisters of Charity won't take new members, signaling end of
congregation

By Kevin J. Jones

Denver, Colo., Apr 28, 2023 / 15:10 pm

The Sisters of Charity of New York, founded in 1846, announced that
they will no longer take new members, describing their congregation as
on "a path to completion."

"The Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul of New York will no
longer work toward finding nor accepting new members to our
congregation in the United States," the congregation said in an April
27 statement.

In a unanimous vote at their 2023 general assembly, the sisters decided
to adopt the recommendations of the congregation's executive council.

The delegates approved the recommendation to affirm that the New York
sisters "continue to live our mission to the fullest, while
acknowledging that we are on a path to completion."

As one of their former victims, this is fine by me.

A friend of mine leased a garage space from them
in a small building they owned in Marble Hill,
MANHATTAN [a]!. I don't recall the specifics but
he had to go to court in trying to keep it.

The point is that... they had plenty of real
estate holdings...

[a] Marble Hill is an outpost of Manhattan
that The Brnx keeps trying to pretend belogs
to them.

The obit would be for when the last member dies,no?
Just as the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the UK (founded 1762)
stopped issuing new policies in 2000 but still has Irish & German
policyholders to pay off.

The Wikipedes say the Sisters of Charity of New York were an
offshoot of a Maryland group started in 1809 by St. Elizabeth Seton,
which in turn derives from that founded by St. Vincent de Paul in 1633.

I don't think so. If the order is no longer accepting new members,
it's done. BTW this seems to be about the order in NYC; I don't know
if it applies to other places, e.g., the Philippines.

The convent that housed the nuns who taught at my elementary school has
long since been turned into a hospital facility of some sort. That
building was constructed in 1959 at no small expense to the parish, but
the nuns had given it up by the early 1970s because their numbers had
dwindled to nearly zero. The building was then used to house
recovering drug addicts.

Elizabeth Seton was an NYC native. Maryland was much friendlier to
Catholics, though.

The Shakers stopped officially accepting members a long time ago
but no one said they were extinct as of that date...eventually
the last few survivors were people against the closure though
their recruiting has not been effective.

The New York entity that is resigning itself to extinction
http://scny.org/ is one part of
http://sisters-of-charity-federation.org/ in turn part of
https://www.filles-de-la-charite.org/
Their press release stating that they "will no longer work toward finding
nor accepting new members to our Congregation" goes on to say they will
"redirect inquiries to Federation congregations".

She was a half-aunt of James Roosevelt Bayley (Bishop of Newark and then
Archbishop of Baltimore),whose mother and grandmother were related to
FDR and more distantly to TR (and to the tow-truck Roosevelts of
Canajoharie, who are the seniormost branch of the family).
(Both Elizabeth and James converted to Catholicism after Episcopal
upbringing).
