It has come to my attention that 92 year old Daniel Ellsberg, Pentagon Papers hero or villain (depending on your point of view) and amateur magician, has pancreatic cancer and is currently in hospice.

He broke the law and was prepared to go to prison for his actions. It is commendable that he was prepared to sacrifice himself. But we still need to be careful about individuals taking the law into their hands and unilaterally deciding what classified information to leak.

“When I copied the Pentagon Papers in 1969, I had every reason to think I would be spending the rest of my life behind bars. It was a fate I would gladly have accepted if it meant hastening the end of the Vietnam War, unlikely as that seemed (and was),” he wrote.

“Yet in the end that action — in ways I could not have foreseen, due to Nixon's illegal responses — did have an impact on shortening the war,” he wrote.

Agreed, but transparency and accountability were things no one even mentioned back then. He really busted things open. I admire the guy. As a teenager out there in protest after protest, I was thrilled to see that development.. Most others were too, although I know that many never even read the stuff and were just following the crowd.
