It's Reddit, but plausible enough.

Unfortunately.

https://www.reddit.com/r/childfree/comments/13rt2wp/parents_need_to_control_their_kids_before_they/

Parents need to control their kids before they seriously hurt someone.
I was out hiking this weekend at a popular site that's famous in the area for it's cliffs and great views. It's a total of about 500ft elevation gain, lots of switchbacks and rocky cliffs.

We finally make it to the top to enjoy the view and the rock formations, and there's a guy with three kids under 6 up there, no other parent in sight. Well one of the little shits, the oldest, decides to grab a jagged rock half the size of his fucking head, lug it over to the edge, and YEETS it off. Dad was watching the entire time but wrangling the two smaller kids.

He did nothing and the kid went to pick up another stone. So I yelled "OH MY GOD sir your kid just threw a huge rock off the cliff! There are people down there, he could really hurt someone!" The guy looks at me and goes "Nah it wasn't that big, it's fine. You know boys."

Thankfully I didn't have to get heated because about 6 other people then spoke up simultaneously and verbally ganged up on the dad about how it was absolutely NOT ok to do that and he needs to watch his kids better.

Dad got offended and said something along the lines of "it's hard with this many kids alone" and someone said "Then don't fucking take them out if you can't handle them!"

He eventually grabbed the kids and started the descent back down, but damn. I hate parents that don't want to take responsibility for their kids. He literally could have killed someone.

I used to work in Yellowstone, in the hotels and would spend my free time out on the trails and one day a friend and I were sitting out by some hot springs and a mother with some kids came by and the kids started to throw shit into the hot spring which is a federal crime. When we told the mother this she went off on us for tell her kids they couldn’t do something until we mention the $5000 fine plus being ban from the parks than she grab the kids and quickly left. I don’t understand why parents feel the need to take kids places they’ll clearly be bored at and let them go crazy.

And then I found this 2008 article, further down.

(The careless rock-thrower, in that case, was an ADULT - and an Iraq War veteran.)

https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/climbing/death-pete-absolon/

Quite a few interesting legal details.

Excerpts:

....Falling objects are the third-most-common cause of climbing injuries, according to data compiled by the American Alpine Club for its annual publication Accidents in North American Mountaineering. But Jed Williamson, the series’s managing editor, says that most accidents occur as a result of naturally falling rock and that, of some 625 reported deaths and injuries involving falling objects since 1951, only a handful resulted from rocks being thrown.

....The (D.A.'s decision not to file charges) distressed many of Absolon’s friends. Powers believes that trundling injuries are often dealt with lightly because they happen in remote areas, but in his view that’s precisely what makes them so dangerous. “If the argument is that this kind of thing happens because Pete was involved in a risk-taker’s sport in a less civilized place, then I push back on both fronts,” he says. “Yes, the rules are different in the backcountry: One’s personal responsibility is heightened, not diminished. The frivolous tossing of a rock is even more irresponsible in the wilderness because the repercussions can be so much greater.”
