I'd wait impatiently for Route 66 to be over because it was on just
before The Twilight Zone.

He's the earliest case I can remember of an actor co-leading a
successful series who left in the middle of things because he was going
to be a great movie star. Note that his obit leads with him
co-starring in Route 66.

While just about everyone remembers the late Maharis and the 'Vette in "Route 66", too few folks recall his underrated starring turn in the underrated 1965 thriller "The Satan Bug". (Eventual Gomer Pyle-tormentor Frank Sutton was pretty convincing therein too, as one of the evil ring Maharis's character was trying to crack.)

The above is absolutely untrue. As outlined in the Hollywood Reporter obit, Maharis had severe hepatitis and left the show. He came back only to suffer a relapse and had to leave permanently to get further treatment.

Your vital correction, Cathy, is only of AF's assertion; please understand my separate "Satan Bug" data stands.

By the way, Y'all: am I the only one who sometimes over the decades conflated (in my ever-cluttered mind) Maharis with his lookalike, the late Paul Mantee, star of "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" ?

Providing misinformation is pretty common for Mr. B S. Too busy trying to be being "clever". What a crashing bore.

There was zero factual misinformation regarding "The Satan Bug" and Maharis from me; Cathy's critique was directed at someone else's comments. I could in turn declare your repeated hectoring of my posts and me personally as "a bore", but I try to be polite to people--even those who constantly ridicule me.

Good luck and good health to you, Mr./Ms. "mik"; I hope no one else is soiling your Memorial Day weekend (as my stupid writing style seems to).

Wasn't Maharis in West Side Story? I did not care for that movie.
As a kid I liked it a bit, but it was one of those movies that got
worse the more I saw it and the older I got. I am not a big fan
of actors period, although I have seen thousands of movies.
But to me Maharas was ok. As a guy whose tastes are hard
to please when it comes to moving pictures, TV or big screen,
I saw Maharis in my later life doing small parts in shows like
Mannix and Cannon, stuff I didn't watch when it was out. He
was not bad. He did not over act. Overrating over acting stars
makes me sick. Maharis was not bad at all in those smaller
roles, playing a young crime boss or whatever. I love when
famous people die and do not mourn his death. But as an
actor there are many worse than he was. I mean way many.

Yeah, I was going with the phonetics of it I guess. The West Side
Story guy's name was George Chakiris. Anyway, there were plenty
of popular TV shows out in the 60s through the 80s that I never
saw till recently, although as a kid I watched thousands of movies
on late night TV from Philly and NYC. I watch MeTv a lot. I don't
like everything on it of course, but it's a good station. They air
Mannix and Cannon and Barnaby Jones on every week night.
I have seen Maharis on some of those episodes and thought
he did competent work. I'm usually putting down actors, so
to get just an ok from me is like receiving an academy award.
I saw Route 66 - not just on TV, hitched it many times - back
when I was in my teens. It's appeal was that no one looked
like they were working. Or if they were working it looked like
a joy. 77 Sunset Strip was that way too. All the characters
in and out of the detective agency all looked like they were
there just to have fun. Shows like that probably had something
to do with me wanting to head west when I hit 21.

Thanks for the correction - got me to the google bar.

Yeah, don't feel too bad, Thomas, as I too--and too often--conflate guys with similar names. And it so happens that the still-living (and, I believe, still working) George Chakiris is someone I ran into one day working at one of the law firms I toiled at as a day job back in the mid-'80s in L.A,

The attorney I worked for shared a reception area with prominent showbiz attorney Stan Diamond, and Chakiris was waiting to see him--I believe Diamond was his agent in those days--but sitting all by himself in a far corner, and seriously couch-slouching as well. Still, the eagle-eyed celebrity hound in me caught him with my peripheral vision, while my mind cautioned, "Sure, it might LOOK like that great dancer in "West Side Story", but how likely is it that's him?"

But it was. And Chakiris seemed happy to not only be recognized, but perfectly delighted as well to talk Hollywood to a 30something paralegal stranger for a good while whilst I was dallying and stealing those minutes from my boss (who had sent me to the reception area merely to pick up the daily office mail delivery).

And as it happens, he wasn't the only "West Side Story" actor I ran into there in West L.A., and around the same time circa 1986. Indeed, it was just a couple blocks south, at "Ted" Bundy Drive and Olympic Blvd. For at that Chevron gas station which still (I'm told) stands on the northeast corner of that busy intersection, who did I pull up right next to filling his black Mercedes gas tank just opposite my own Saab one Wednesday eve? None other than also-still-surviving John Astin.

Alas, I got so wrapped up in talking to Astin about how he came to sub for Frank Gorshin as the Riddler on "Batman"--didn't have the HEART to tell him he was no Gorshin in that role, but Astin probably realized it himself even back in 1967 when shooting that lame two-parter--that I plum FORGOT to inquire about a separate Astin matter I'd long wondered about, and remain perplexed by every time I re-watch WSS (which is fairly often, for it's one of my three or four all-time fave musicals).

Now, you may not recall that Astin even HAD a small part in WSS, it was so quick. (The future Patty Duke husband Astin played the school-dance coordinator at the mixer where Tony meets Maria.) But ANOTHER reason you may not remember he's in there is because he is TOTALLY absent from the graffiti-style closing credits! (And there ARE no opening credits.) And what I've always been puzzled by is why he would have not INSISTED on being credited--every other small part is, but I can't find Astin anywhere amid that graffiti--among heavyweight names like Robert Wise, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and Jerome Robbins, not to mention Natalie Wood.

Oh, and I also regret not asking Astin if he had any great stories from working--in a FAR larger, and credited, role than in WSS--with Doris Day and Cary Grant in "That Touch of Mink", but I suppose you can only cover so much while pumping gas.

I am an extreme critic when it comes to show biz, especially moving pictures.
For that reason alone I found myself stunned and feeling kind of low when I
realized I made that mistake - Maharis for Chikaris. Patty Duke was married
several times. One of her husbands - I don't know which - used to come to
the poolroom where he didn't mind coughing up a small amount of cash to
players willing to play him and beat him without getting greedy and wanting
more. He wanted to be pleasantly taken advantage of. I know the feeling.
In the carnival everyone seen coming down the midway is called a mark. I
worked the carnival for 6 months. I'm no vet but I learned enough and it's
not my thing. But one night I remember the carny I shared the game tent
with used the term 'mark', and I told him I wished I had enough money to be
a mark on an everyday basis. I told him maybe he is the mark for standing in
a tent all day looking for marks. Anyway, I lived in Hollywood for 23 years
and was drunk most of the time. I loved it though. I drove a cab there for 13
years after finding out I didn't have the talent to get by without working.
When not working became a full time job I went out and got into driving the
cab. I liked Astin in the few things I saw him in. He was light - in a heavy way.
Oh yeah man. I love dissing known actors, especially the method people.
I want to crawl into their skin. I want to get in so deep I may never come out
again. I want to spread my wings. To work my chops. I am an artiste, man,
not some cheap actor!

Correct. I was pretty young when the movie came out. Well, not
that young. I was in my teens. But I didn't watch a lot of TV although
I did catch some of Route 66 at the time it was out. It was like my
life was shattered - my ego anyway - when I found out I was wrong
about Maharis being in West Side Story. By the way, if I was his
agent he'd find time. I say work, he works. I say where he asks when.
I work my guys hard but when it's all said and done they are the best
in the biz and I am proud to be a part of their lives.

MeTV has a second channel called MeTV+ that is well worth checking out
if you're a fan of the shows that are aired on "regular" MeTV. They are
currently airing 77 Sunset Strip as well as Hawaiian Eye, to name two
shows worth noting. Check your local channel lineup, in my area it's
available over-the-air as well as on cable.

MeTv is my go to channel. I have the lowest cable tier there is.
I never knew I had MeTv and had never even heard of it until one
day sitting alone at home with the remote in my hand I hit the
channel button and let it roll all the way to the end of 99 channels.
But I didn't stop. I kept my finger on the button. Every so often
it would pause on a station with a message saying I do not
qualify for it. But I kept my finger on the button and the stations
rolled by fast. When I got into the 1200s suddenly stations
began to appear. I never knew they existed. All the antenna
type stations, a bunch of them as well as a bunch of radio stations
of which I listen to only one, "Singers and Swing."

I want you to know I am not a nostalgia buff. There was plenty
of garbage around even in the golden age of Hollywood. Same
goes for TV. There are plenty of shows I don't care for on MeTV,
shows I watched when I was younger and didn't care for then
either. But I give all a shot. Sometimes the shot doesn't last
long. I am not searching for new things. They tend to come my
way when I'm not looking. But thanks for the heads up. I'm 75
and saw most of the shows that were out when I was in my teens,
including the ones you mentioned. 77 Sunset Strip used to be on
MeTv. They took it off for something else. It's interesting, the
switches they make. They must be made, can't be the same
shows forever. But for now, hit and miss, I'll roll with MeTv over
just about any station including TCM which the cable company
removed to a higher tier. It was gone for several years. Then
just last week I pumped in the channel for the first time in years
and "There it was!" But they're playing a lot of crap too on top
of good stuff now and then. To me even garbage TV is a luxury,
as long as it's my kind of garbage. Thanks for the post, Dave.

Well, (1) it ain't 77, or any number of The Sunset Strip; (2) Stuart Bailey was, save a wonderful gal Friday named Bix, working alone in 1947; and (3) his office seems to have been located somewhere mid-Wilshire.

But this earliest cinematic iteration starring Franchot Tone as later-Zimbalist TV character Stu Bailey loved trouble so much that his creator Roy Huggins even titled it "I Love Trouble". And though this once-lost noir survives only in this dreadful discovered print, it's a nonetheless a terrific film. (And would still have been even without familiar-face Sid Tomack's memorable but uncredited turn as a retired comic, serving up chowder and tips to Bailey.)

This is my fave performance yet* of the late Tone**--who expired in NYC at only 63 after failing health on Wednesday, September 18, 1968 (while the next day, country music pioneer Red Foley would die at 58 in Ft. Wayne).

Late TCM maven Robert Osborne reported that somebody-or-other once told of visiting the aging Joan Crawford sometime in the mid-'60s, and noticed a silent, wheelchair-confined fellow residing in a spare bedroom of Crawford's digs. Inquiring of Crawford his name, she replied Franchot Tone (but needn't have added, "I was his first wife".)

BRYAN STYBLE/Florida

* Haven't seen Tone in more than maybe a half-dozen roles, but that does include his dying POTUS in "Advise and Consent".
** Of whom I've heard at least three pronunciations of his given name; anyone know definitively?

As a kid in the orphanage it was TV once a week Sunday night,
Walt Disney, usually Daniel Boone or Davey Crockett. It was a
treat. Later in my teens living for free at my grandparent's home
I would stay up all night watching all night movie stations from Philly
and NYC. I saw way more films and knew more about them than
Robert Osborne ever did. He made an effort of it though and I give
him credit, but I could tell he did not know as much about his subjects
as he pretended.

I liked Tone. I did not know his age when he died but I did not see
him as dying young because I remember him from movies in the
30s - also Mutiny on The Bounty - and he was obviously younger
than I had thought. I saw him in a few Hitchcock's and Twilight
Zones and other TV stuff. He played the stuffy type well in his
later years, as did Ray Milland who I did not care for when he was
younger. I liked him in Lost Weekend, of course - but overall I liked
him more in cheap monster and sci fi flicks that came later. Same
with Crawford. She did good playing the frump in her later years.
But overall while I know a lot about a lot of the Hollywood people,
I really don't care much for actors. Almost anybody can act. If
they're not afraid of the camera they can be steered around rather
well by any decent director. In certain roles I think non actors do
a better job. Cheetah proved that in the Tarzan movies. I loved
that one scene where Tarzan got hurt and told Cheetah to go for help.
En route the chimp encountered all kinds of problems - crocs,
lions, you name it - all nicely edited in.

And the Oscar goes to.......................

Appreciate your recollections, Thomas, but a vital correction:

Sure, pretty much anyone can read lines, but UNLESS they render them in such fashion so to make the audience forget every other role they've seen him or her in, they're not acting, at least proficiently. But IF they so embody the character--including various distinguishing mannerisms, etc.--that those in the seats start actually believing this familiar star IS that character, then and only then are they successfully accomplishing the not-at-all simple task of convincingly ACTING.

Meanwhile, hope you enjoy "I Love Trouble" even a fraction as much as I did....even on my third-and-counting screening.

I see how my words might make one think I hate actors as people.
I did not mean that. I mean more. I mean they are not needed. Take
that stuff back to the stage! I don't need to know how many different
characters a single actor can do. Or his ability to cry on cue. I like
actors who don't get into different characters or do different accents.
Same guy every time. But he can lots of different parts without
crawling into the character's skin or going in so deep he may never
come out - heavy man, I mean really deep. I guess what I'm trying to
say is, "You got the camera - use it." I don't like the actor carrying the
show, which if they had the chance they would all do. DeNiro was an
early King of it. He'd say everything at least twice - "Going to the store,
gonna get some smokes, want any", followed by a pause then, "Want
any?", again. I'm just joking but it's also true, by saying everything twice
DeNiro ensured that his screen time would be double that of his co stars.
I'm just trying to say there are all kinds of better ways to move a story
along than with acting. For instance, an old style scene - a woman
answers the door for a telegram announcing her soldier husband just
died in action - she gets the message and we see her face, no words,
and we get it. No need for the tears. "Yeah Johnny, we can use you
for this role. You'd be great for the part. But first, as producer of this
project I need to know: "Can you cry on cue?"

A lot of acting means not a lot of story, usually. I really enjoy jumping
on the method boys. You know, something you love to hate.
