Food security in space: Farming salad in moon soil

Scientists have grown plants in soil taken from the lunar
surface. It's a sign that people could one day live on the
moon, grow food and produce water.

.. . .

Ummm ... yea, you CAN do it - but lunar "soil" is more
like ultra-powdered GLASS than like what we think of
as "soil" on earth. What they've essentially done is
hydroponics - where all the nutrients are delivered in
a solution and the "soil" contributes so little that
it may as well not be there.

Earth soil, even desert soil, is a product of water,
microbials and fungi eating away at the mineral
particles for millions of years and everything from
microbes up to plants and insects up to camels leaving
- um - "product" in said soil.

Lunar dirt can add a few trace minerals, but that's
about it. May as well just stick to straight hydroponics.
In economic aspects, it MIGHT be cheaper to freeze-dry
earth veggies and launch them to the moon. There is
SOME "emergency reserve" aspect to lunar grow-yer-own
however. The cost/benefit ratio needs to be calculated.
