Sharon Farrell, 'It's Alive,' 'Night of the Comet' Actress, Dead at 82

Sharon Farrell, a glamorous contract player who had a prolific TV career and made big impressions in several features, died in May at 82, her sister confirms on Facebook.

Farrell's death at L.A. Downtown Medical Center, which was not widely reported at the time, came after spending time in care facilities.

Farrell, born December 24, 1940, in Sioux City, Iowa, was a dancer first, working at the American Ballet Theatre in the 1950s.

In 1959, she made her film debut in "Kiss Her Goodbye," a low-budget psychological thriller that also featured Elaine Stritch.

Other early films included "40 Pounds of Trouble" (1962) with Tony Curtis and Suzanne Pleshette; "The Spy with My Face," a 1965 movie spun off from the TV hit "The Man from U.N.C.L.E."; the noir films "A Lovely Way to Die" (1968) with Kirk Douglas and "Marlowe" (1969) with James Garner; "The Reivers" (1969) opposite Steve McQueen, with whom she famously had an affair; and the Jacqueline Susann scorcher "The Love Machine" (1971).

Farrell enjoyed meatier — and more plentiful — roles on TV, including as a regular on "Saints and Sinners" (1962) and a widely admired episode of "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" (1965) called "Final Performance" with a deeply unsettling ending.

Much later, she was a popular addition to "The Young and the Restless," appearing on more than 80 episodes (1991-1997).

In 1970, Farrell suffered brain damage after giving birth to her only son, former actor Chance Boyer. She hid the devastating effects of her illness and continued working, including her appearances in the films for which she is most remembered — the gruesome "It's Alive" (1974); the Chuck Norris/David Carradine favorite "Lone Wolf McQuade" (1983); and the beloved '80s comedies "Night of the Comet" (1984) and "Can't Buy Me Love" (1987).

Farrell was a flirtatious storyteller who published her memoir "'Hollywood Princess' from Sioux City Iowa" in 2013.

She largely retired from acting after the '90s, returning for two episodes of the series "Broken at Love" (2013-2014), and appearing at numerous autograph shows.

Farrell was married and divorced (including one annulment) five times, including an early marriage to actor Andrew Prine, who died last year.

She is survived by her son.

I had no idea she was in "The Young and the Restless" - but I never watched soaps. (Dave Barry's second wife, Beth, didn't watch soaps either - but when she and Dave visited Japan in the early 1990s and she saw a TV in a restaurant, showing a soap opera mother talking to two young daughters, Beth, who didn't speak Japanese, had no trouble translating everything that was said in that scene. As she said: "You can just tell.")

Farrell was the last survivor of the top five actors from the very grim "Out of the Blue" (1980), and the third actor listed.

The others were Linda Manz (the star), Dennis Hopper (as the husband of Farrell and the father of Manz), Raymond Burr (as the school counselor) and Don Gordon (as Hopper's pal).

See here for more on the movie and on Manz in particular:

Sorry to hear this. The thing I'll remember her the most for was her
appearance on The Name of the Game, in an oddball science-fiction
episode called L.A. 2017. It aired in January 1971.

She also appeared in an infomercial for a "psychic" named Kenny
Kingston.

I'm posting the complete (and excellent) Hollywood Reporter obituary because it includes a curious quote from her son claiming that she was never married. This contradicts the original "Extra TV" obit which said she was married and divorced five times.

It should be noted that IMDB and Wikipedia not only list the marriages, they also note the (supposed?) marriage dates and divorce dates.

This obit also mentions something I had forgotten - that she was brought in as a detective on the final season of "Hawaii Five-O" after James MacArthur left.

Sharon Farrell, Actress in ‘It’s Alive,’ ‘Marlowe’ and ‘The Reivers,’ Dies at 82
She also was known for her turns in 'The Stunt Man,' 'Lone Wolf McQuade,' 'Can't Buy Me Love,' 'Hawaii Five-O' and 'The Young and the Restless.'

Sharon Farrell, who starred as the mother of a murderous infant in It’s Alive and contributed strong supporting turns opposite James Garner and Steve McQueen, respectively, in the 1969 films Marlowe and The Reivers, has died. She was 82.

Farrell died unexpectedly May 15 of natural causes at a hospital in Orange County, her son, Chance Boyer, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Farrell also played a movie hairstylist in Richard Rush‘s The Stunt Man (1980), the ex-wife of Chuck Norris’ Texas Ranger in Lone Wolf McQuade (1983) and the mother of the cheerleader portrayed by Amanda Peterson in Can’t Buy Me Love (1987).

On television, Farrell recurred as Det. Lori Wilson on the final season (1979-80) of CBS’ Hawaii Five-O and was Florence Webster, mother of Tricia Cast’s Nina Webster, on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless from 1991-97.

In the horror thriller It’s Alive (1974), written and directed by Larry Cohen and featuring special effects make-up from Rick Baker, Farrell’s Lenore Davis feverishly tries to protect the hideously deformed child she just had, even though the infant has escaped from the hospital and is killing people around town.

Farrell sets the story in motion in Marlowe when her character, a Kansas woman named Orfamay Quest, hires private eye Philip Marlowe (Garner) to find her brother, and she played the love interest of McQueen’s Boon Hogganbeck in The Reivers, directed by Mark Rydell.

Sharon Forsmoe was born on Christmas Eve in 1940 in Sioux City, Iowa. She joined the American Ballet Company, worked in a road production of Oklahoma! and moved to New York, where she acted and modeled.

She made her film debut alongside Elaine Stritch in Kiss Her Goodbye (1959), then danced on Broadway in 1960 in Josh Logan’s There Was a Little Girl, starring Jane Fonda and Dean Jones.

In 1962, Farrell starred alongside Nick Adams on the short-lived NBC newspaper drama Saints and Sinners and appeared with Tony Curtis and Suzanne Pleshette in the comedy film 40 Pounds of Trouble.

Farrell was quite busy with TV guest-starring roles over the decades, showing up on everything from My Favorite Martian, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and The Wild Wild West to The F.B.I., The Six Million Dollar Man, McCloud, Police Woman, Matlock and JAG.

Her film résumé also included A Lovely Way to Die (1968), Not With My Wife, You Don’t! (1966), Jacqueline Susann’s The Love Machine (1971) and Night of the Comet (1984).

In the 2018 book Bruce Lee: A Life, author Matthew Polly notes that the martial arts legend and McQueen were involved in “a love triangle” with Farrell that resulted in Lee and McQueen not doing a movie together.

Farrell also had relationships with actors Andrew Prine and John F. Boyer, producer Ron DeBlasio and director Dale Trevillion, but she never married them or anyone else, her son noted. “That’s something they do in Hollywood, to say that they’re married,” he said.

In addition to Chance, who played a surfer on the 1991-93 syndicated TV series Harry and the Hendersons and was on General Hospital and in Frank Marshall’s Arachnophobia (1990), survivors include her grandson, Wayde, and daughter-in-law Mandi.

And, as it happens, when it came Farrell's feature films, "Out of the Blue" had the highest rating - 7.2!

I saw "The Stunt Man" (rating: 7.0) many years ago and remember liking it - but I've forgotten everything else about it.

But...Farrell was also in three episodes of "Gunsmoke," from 1963 to 1964, and those three episodes had VERY high ratings.

"Trip West" - 7.5

"Quint's Trail" - 7.8

"With a Smile" - 8.9 (wow!)

You can watch at least one of those online.

I did get to say "Hello, old friend" to Michael O'Hare once, surely the
height of the depths of geekdom. (I've long since embraced my inner
geek.)

Mr. O'Hare was looking to be put in touch with an sf publisher, and I
did that. I don't know if anything ever came of it.
