I remember being bummed straight to video cult classic Summer Camp Nightmare wasn't a slasher but very impressed with Chuck Connors tour de force final performance as camp director Mr. Warren

Connors was also memorable in "Move Over, Darling", the Doris Day/James Garner color rom-com remake of Cary Grant's monochrome "My Favorite Wife".

And Connors was cursed to be cast as a pie-loving yokel in one of the silliest episodes of "The Adventures of Superman". (Okay, EVERY one in the 104-episode run was silly, inasmuch as each was premised upon nobody noticing that Clark Kent looked just like Superman with glasses.)

Oh, come on! The glasses thing is a gimmick we're asked to accept at
the outset. Do so or not, it's entirely up to you, but harping on the
glasses disguise as being thin is a thoroughly moth-eaten criticism.
Also, not every episode was silly, as you put it, but they got much
less serious when Whit Ellsworth took over as producer from Robert
Maxwell, and National decided that Adventures of Superman was a kid's
show and not the primetime drama for all ages that they'd originally
envisioned.

Sir or Madam "A Friend":

It so happens that years ago in these e-parts I rhapsodized about the early seasons of "The Adventures of Superman". ESPECIALLY that first one.

And not merely because the pivotal role of Lois Lane was essayed by the still-living Phyllis Coates--born and known to pals as Gypsie--hands-down the most nuanced and well-acted Lois ever (even surpassing Joan Alexander from the radio series, and light years beyond Noel Neill's familiar take).

That first 26-episode season, with Maxwell and Lee Sholem, Tommy Carr trading directorial duties, almost always featured a mystery as part of the plot, and often included quirky guest characters. And people would die in some episodes ("Czar of the Underworld" [sans Coates], and "The Stolen Costume" with guest gumshoe "Candy", and maybe even "The Mind Machine" (not sure on that one, but even if it didn't kill them, it did remotely destroy their minds).

Coates and her signature scream were in fine evidence in "The Deserted Village"--a DOG was killed in that one!--which featured as the radiation-suit menace the same actor who played an especially-genial wrestler in "No Holds Barred", the immediately-previous episode, if memory serves. And the offbeat "A Night of Terror" was an aptly-titled episode. And Jimmy vacationing up in New England [another one sans Coates] and stumbling onto a smuggling operation was well done too.

Can't claim I fully understand your point that the glasses-disguise schtick was merely a gimmick; if what you mean is that once that is accepted or at least forgotten, you're free to enjoy a fantasy about a heroic alien who works in an action-central setting, a daily newspaper?

If so, then yes indeed, I loved MANY episodes. And as indelible in the Kent role as George Reeves remains, that didn't hinder me from appreciating the ill-fated Christopher Reeve's cinematic iteration. Point is, I ain't no live-action Superman foe; that's Lex Luthor, who interestingly, never went up against Reeves on TV.

Still, the long-running TV series jumped its shark in its color years: dream episodes, the midget Martian, the pirate-island excursion and that cave-man one are but the most annoying examples which come to mind.

I was honored to interview Phyllis Coates from her suburban San Francisco Bay Area home on "Radioactive Albuquerque with Bryan Styble" over KKNS Newsradio in 2003. But we focussed on Lois, not her pre- and post-Superman credits, which are substantial. (In over a half-dozen of those Behind-the-8-Ball-Guy Warner Bros. comic-shorts which TMC often airs, she played McDoakes' wife Alice.)

Thanks "A Friend", for giving me an excuse to mentally revisit that glorious Coates season of Superman--and anticipate her turning 100 in January 2027..

In fact, no subsidiary character from the comics, either hero or
villain or somewhere in between, was ever featured in the series.
Similarly, no character from the series appeared in the comics -- at
least not for a couple of decades, when Inspector Henderson started
showing up once in a while.

I've never heard a good explanation as to why.

Of course it was a gimmick, since glasses as a disguise doesn't work in
real life. It worked in Superman because glasses-as-disguise was one
of the main rules.

Superman is the only example I can think of right now where the hero's
secret identity is the one who's "masked" -- in this case, by glasses
and, of course, mannerisms and other schtick. When Supes finally
dropped the disguise late in the original run, he remained Clark;
Superman was what Clark could do, not who he was.

You do not count Olsen or White?
How do you define "subsidiary" as opposed to "supporting" character?

Of course Olsen and White (and Lane, too) are in the series. They
were, and are, among the main cast.

I think I was clear. Reread as necessary.

featured in the series,no?

Again, they are main cast, not subsidiary. In that series, Ma and Pa
Kent are subsidiary. We never see Ma again, even though she is still
alive when Clark moves to Metropolis. She's never even mentioned.

I think Inspector Henderson would be a good example of a subsidiary
character.
