Canadian educator and anthropologist Isabel Crook, who pioneered English language teaching in New China, died on Sunday in Beijing at the age of 107.

Crook was born in Chengdu, Sichuan province, and was engaged in ethnological studies of China and the nation's rural development for her entire career.

After tying the knot with David Crook (1910-2000), a committed communist from the UK, Isabel went to London with her husband, where they took part in the World Anti-Fascist War.

In 1947, the Crooks traveled to Shilidian village in Hebei province, where they observed and joined the land reform program.

2 things that come to mind:

1) I don't see any Canadian connection here in this obit. She was born
in China (and, as far as I can tell, spent most of her life there), and
he husband was British. Where does Canada come into it?

2) If my last name was Crook, I'd change it. In her case, I'd have
changed it to "Ringing".

BTW, I won't be surprised to learn that she actually was Canadian, in some
sense, but this obit cerainly doesn't make the case for it.

Wikipedia: "Isabel Brown was born on 15 December 1915, in Chengdu,
Sichuan, to Canadian missionaries Homer and Muriel Brown. Homer was the
dean of the Education Faculty at West China Union University. Muriel
set up Montessori Schools in China and served on the board of the
YWCA." So, yes, she's Canadian as well as a few other things.
