TERRY FUNK WRESTLING LEGEND DEAD AT 79

Wrestling legend Terry Funk -- a WWE Hall of Famer -- has died ... Ric Flair announced Wednesday.

"In My Entire Life," Flair said in revealing the passing of his good pal, "I've Never Met A Guy Who Worked Harder. Terry Funk Was A Great Wrestler, Entertainer, Unbelievably Fearless, And A Great Friend!

"Rest In Peace My Friend."

Flair did not reveal a cause of death.

Mick Foley added in a tribute on his Instagram page that Funk's daughter had confirmed to him the devastating news earlier in the day.

"WE JUST LOST A LEGEND," Foley wrote. "There will never be another like him. May God bless Terry, his friends, family and all who loved him. RIP my dear friend - it was an honor to know you."

Funk initially broke into the wrestling world in 1965 -- and went on to perform in rings all over the world for the next five decades.

He competed in a bunch of different promotions in his career -- including All Japan Pro Wrestling, the WWE, the WCW and the ECW. He held various championship belts at times in most of the orgs too.

"No One Will Ever Replace You In The World Of Professional Wrestling!" Flair added in his statement Wednesday.

Funk also enjoyed a career on the silver screen ... earning a significant role in Patrick Swayze's classic, bar-brawling action film "Road House."

RIP

There was a time when pro wrestling had some interesting and entertaining
characters. Now it's "let's see how many people we can get in the ring at
one time." Funk was not bad. But there were others I liked more.

When I was in my teens in the early 60s my entertainment hero was
ex wrestler/now manager Wild Red Berry. He wore a costume that
put me in mind of Bat Masterson. He used multi syllable words to
describe what his wrestlers were going to do to their opponents. "He
is going to rip the medulla oblongata from his cranial structure." One
of his wrestlers at the time was Hans Mortier who wore a spiked Helmet
WW1 German style. He never spoke. In those days the managers did
all the talking.

When a pro wrestling show came to Allentown Pa and I learned Wild
Red was going to be there I knew I had to be there too. I snuck in. I
was with a friend. I went backstage and asked somebody if he knew
where Wild Red Berry was. "Downstairs", he said, pointing down some
steps. One of his wrestlers was pacing back and forth, getting into
character. He looked up and saw me looking down and scowled, "What
the fuck are you looking at?" I knew it was just a game but it still took
me back a bit. Then Wild Red appeared. He came partway up the steps
as I went down. I shook his hand and told him I loved his stuff. I told him
I thought he was funny. His face showed an emotion I can't describe, but
it was obvious he did not take my comments as a compliment. I was about
13 years old. I saw he did not understand me. I said, "You know, the way
you use the big words, medulla oblongata and so forth - it's funny stuff."
And then his face beamed. He understood. I think at first he found it
difficult to believe that a teenager - especially a fan rabid enough to
hunt him down in the bowels of the stadium - would find humor in it.
But he understood when I explained it. It was like the Joe Pesci thing
where he goes nuts with, "What, you think I'm funny? Why? Why do
you think I'm funny. What am I, a clown or what? Is that what I am
to you, a fucking clown?" - Or whatever. Anyway, I enjoyed hunting
down Wild Red and getting his acknowledgment, and I also greatly
enjoyed the unknown pro wrestler growling at me up the steps, "What
the fuck are you looking at?" I loved it.

Right about now I'd say that Fred Funk is just beginning to
know what real funk is.
